Super Lanky, Super Frail, eggplant seedlings.....

Ok, I haven't gardened for over 5 years, I knew so little, remember even less. My schedule is messed up and I am embarrassingly late for this season.

That being said I have a bunch of eggplant seedlings; they seem to be growing fine, there is no sign of rot and putting on leaves at regular intervals. However they seem so frail and long. The stems could be sewing thread. If I plant them outside and a squirrel ran past them (leave alone over them) they would fall over, it seems. (Almost like throwing a baby in to the ocean to learn to swim?) It doesn't help that there has been no sun the past few days. I do put the potted up seedlings on a plastic tray an on a heating mat. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. They seem to be ok with that.

Is there a way to meat-y up eggplant seedlings? They seem to be the worst off of all my other seedlings (tomato, peppers, squash).

And when is a good time to plant outdoors? When they have 3 or 5 or 7 ........true leaves?

Oh! and can one bury eggplant stems like for tomatoes?

Thank you so much for your input.
