Oh no that sounds like it would fit my oven. Take good care of it and when you buy a new oven maybe we will buy the element from you. lol I'm glad that you were able to find a replacement. We've been using a toaster oven as its just the two of us.

I hope it lasts a long time, but if it doesn't I suggest the Breville smart oven as an alternative. I love mine. I use it every day and only use my regular oven at thanksgiving now.

It seems that's always the way it is when you try to replace appliances. Either they don't fit, the features are undesirable (washing machines), or for some reason they are just not what you want. Glad you found the element.

When we first bought our house in 1981, the prior owner left an "ancient" gas clothes dryer in the basement. It was a commercial model called "Speed Queen". Turned out the thing worked great for many years, and had a large capacity. One day I noticed it was taking an awful long time to dry a load off towels. and something smelled "burnt". My husband removed the door and took the burned out part to an appliance repair store. They had the replacement part (a "solenoid") in stock. A few bucks and a few turns of a screw, and the old Speed Queen ran a few more years. I think it finally died in 2000. Since it was "free" with the house, it was a bargain! I also recently had trouble with my Sears Kenmore dishwasher. It seemed the keypad was dead, no lights were on and pushing various buttons did not start it. So I did some research on the Internet, found good clear instructions telling how to restart the keypad. You push certain buttons in order. It's been working since. Seems there's a lot of life in old appliances! Oh, my current stove is broken. It's old, bought in 1987, so I am looking for a new one. In the meantime, the oven part and three of four burners work, so I'm getting by.

I have always had old stoves and I have an avocado green Wedgwood wall oven in the other house....probably from the '60's. Still works and if it quits, there is a place in Houston that restores old stoves and ovens. The stove I plan to put in this house is a 1949 Maytag. It is built like tank, but it is the kind of stove I like. Good that you found an element for your wall oven!

Recently the ice maker on our fridge stopped making ice. I researched it on the Internet, found out how to remove the unit, and found diagnostic procedures to determine what was wrong. Although the first tests seemed to show both the ice maker and the fill valve solenoid were bad, further information showed that the electric eye ice-level sensor was faulty. I ordered that part online for $40 and was back in business in about 5 minutes.
A repairman would likely have charged list price for the sensor, $120, and another $80 (or more) for the 5 minutes work, and he might have decided the ice maker and solenoid needed replacing too which would have ended up around $500.

This is very instructive! DH isn't 'handy', and I'd probably need to hire someone to do the work, but replacing just a *part* can be the best solution. Now I just have to remember this!

Old timey appliances can last a VERY long time. An old timey electric oven doesn't have all the modern doodads that can go wrong.

If it was me I'd probably have ordered another, backup element, knowing full well that the oven would probably outlast me before it needed the spare, lol.

I'm of the opposite view - while an oven is an oven, those who cling to other types of old appliances like washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, etc, when they can afford to replace them, are missing out on a lot.

New appliances are more capable, MUCH more energy efficient, and usually more reliable.

Compare it to a car - it's nice to see the old Corvette or Mustang (or older car) in a town parade. But come Monday morning when driving to work, or when heading off on a long drive, that car owner will be better served with a more reliable and newer car that gets much better gas mileage and has airbags, anti-lock brakes, GPS, etc, etc.,

Totally agree on the energy efficiency of ACs and refrigerators. But it was hard to beat the reliability of Grandpa's ice box.

Just this past December, Hubs and I bought a new KitchenAid 'fridge because he decided we just HAD to get a new one. I refused to give up the old one, so it's in the garage. The new fridge has more cubic feet of storage space, both in the 'fridge part as well as the freezer. Even so, we simply cannot get as much food in the new unit as in the old unit. And the old one is still working great!

I bought the old fridge, brand new, in July 1971. It was originally a Harvest Gold type color (although the name was not Harvest Gold), but I had it professionally re-enameled about 25 years ago. The thing works great. It has been serviced exactly once, in 1991, when some part needed to be replaced in the unit in the freezer. I know that it is absolutely NOT energy efficient at all, but neither am I. I'm not going to throw myself away, so I won't do it to that 'fridge, either. :-)

I disagree with Snidely's statement that new appliances are more reliable (even though he did qualify his statement by adding "usually"). My old 'fridge has needed servicing once in 44 years and it's still going strong. I'm willing to bet that it will still be going when the new 'fridge conks out. They are not built to last.

When we sold Mom's house this past year, the oven was @ 55 years old and as right as rain. Chances are the new people will remodel the new kitchen, but I hope they give the oven away as it is an awesome oven that never failed. For the older appliances it seems that age means nothing!

Lindsey, if a larger interior allows for less food, then maybe you bought the wrong product? Or, maybe you don't have shelves adjusted to maximize capacity?

If you were to list for sale the old fridge and the new one on Craigslist, which one would you get more calls for? Does that say anything?

It seems foolish to be boastful about wasting energy, but fine, make yourself happy.

If Lindsey is comparing the stated cubic feet listed on each of the two products, and is finding that although the newer one claims to be larger it holds less, it could be that the company is using a more "creative" way of measuring the volume of the new fridge. It is already pretty common for the marketing division to fudge the measurement of the front-to-back depth of refrigerators, now commonly not counting the door handle, or the thickness of the door, or any required clearances on the back of the unit.
Perhaps before the measurement of volume was "actual usable volume" whereas now they measure total volume of the interior and neglect to subtract the volume occupied by the shelves and drawers and racks. I also wonder how much the greater energy efficiency is actually true and how much is solely down to more "creative" ways of gaming the tests.
I have a "shop vac" that claims to be "6 horsepower" which is amusing, since if it were actually duty-rated at 6 horsepower, I wouldn't be able to lift it, and it would require at least 38 amps (at 120 volts) to run it, and would need a special circuit, a larger power cord, and a different plug on the end.

The side by side refrigerator we purchased a few years ago to replace our previous "fridge above, freezer below" model supposedly has more cubic feet. But I will never buy a side by side again. I make all the birthday cakes for our family and can no longer fit even a 9x13 cake in the fridge. A shelf would have to be nearly empty for me to do that. Even when I'm not trying to fit a cake in there, it just seems so cramped. I feel like someone's tied my arms together just above the elbows send it makes it difficult to remove anything from the back of a shelf.

Electricity consumption (or natural gas consumption, for appliances that use gas) is very easily measured. That's what the EPA's Energy Star program is all about. Newer refrigerators and freezers use much less energy than their predecessor models. Same is true for central A/C units, for those houses that have them. That's why many utilities are mandated to offer rebates and credits to customers who replace old appliances.

Side by side refrigerators are known for using space poorly and because of it, they lack the useable space that many single door models offer. They're popular but less functional, not unlike many other popular features people seem to put into their kitchen remodels that are nice to look at but not so nice to use.
