Please help with updating my outdated coastal cottage kitchen
Comments (9)Have you considered prefab formica countertops in a neutral color? They are not too expensive and would have a big impact on your kitchen. They are not granite but they would probably look less dated than what you already have. Another inexpensive option is butcher block. I did a tumbled travertine backsplash with my pickled oak. I know its a cliche but the travertine has a mixture of tans and greys that pulls different colors together without making the cabinets look pink. An accent color that worked for me is terra cotta. You need to stay away from pinky tones which bring out the pink in the cabinets, but sometimes if you go with a stronger color, the cabinets will look neutral in comparison. New knobs for the cabinets made a surprising difference. I went with an oil rubbed bronze finish. Knobs really dress up the cabinets. Try some knobs with interesting shapes to draw your eye to the knobs and away from the cabinets. Fancy knobs can be quite expensive but you could use just a few for the focal point cabinets and use coordinating but cheaper and simpler ones for the rest of the kitchen....See MoreAnyone use Kitchen Magic or had a good experience with refacing?
Comments (3)I would say, absolutely go for it! I kept most of my existing cabs and had them refaced (new doors and stain). Since it was a matter of staining and needing a new section of cabs built, I had a local cabinet maker do it all. But, in a painting situation, it would be so much easier. I have read many good things about Scherr's and don't think you could go wrong with that one plan of yours. Call them up so you can be advised as to the best hinges and bore holes for the doors so ordering the doors and hanging them will go smoothly. They will make the holes for you. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do!...See MoreHelp with small outdated kitchen
Comments (12)Location is everything! Painting the walls and your own furniture will go a long way. You could paint the oak; I don't mind oak but the grain is a little too pronounced on yours for me. But it's more expensive to hire out, and more time-consuming to do yourself, thank you might think. Try to work with it for a while. Wall color helps a lot. The main think you'll want to do is get some roll-outs for the bottom cabinets. Container Store, in Northbrook and Schaumburg and maybe OakBrook?, have their big sale going on right now, check it out. I think it goes on into February. And the ikea in Schaumburg will have some good ideas, too....See MoreHELP! Outdated Kitchen Cupboards & Wall Paint Color problem!
Comments (39)Do not be embarrassed about your kitchen! You have chosen to stay home with the kids - more important than cabinets any day. Normally, I don't encourage cabinet painting, but your finish is worn and that is the time to consider it. I have white appliances and I love them - I will never do stainless. I have a friend with a newer white kitchen and she has white appliances. There is nothing wrong with white appliances. Turn off HGTV:) Just make sure if you go white, that it works with the appliances. One of the fun things about an older kitchen is you can get creative with it, especially if you are at all open to cottage style. You can have the center panel of one or more cabinets removed and replaced with glass or for a farmhouse touch, chicken wire with fabric shirred behind it. It is hard to make an older kitchen look modern, but if it is your style, it is easy to make it sweet and cozy. I would not do a countertop paint - they don't last and your present counter is fine - it is not bright orange or red so leave it alone:) I retrofitted a plate rail in one of my cabinets - if you want info just ask: from Pinterest If you have any sewing skills, you can make a faux roman shade for the window. I also have no problem with your signs on you soffit. I have plates on mine. Your kitchen should express your style and be unique to you: My faux roman shade, plates on my soffit and white appliances: https://www.houzz.com/photos/my-pics-work-in-progress-phvw-vp~110720042 If you don't go with white, consider a soft green: Another thought since you have kids is white uppers and navy or royal blue or gray/blue lowers - might be easier to keep looking nice with kids. An inexpensive backsplash is the textured, paintable beadboard wallpaper. I don't generally like faux products, but this is good, inexpensive product ($20 Lowes), and very easy to do.
