I can't think of any drawbacks. It's a runner, spreading by rhizome, but if that doesn't concern you, it should serve well. I wouldn't use it where it might spread into someone else's property, but both of my grass books speak well of it's hardiness and appearance. PS..one of my books calls it Leymus, and the other Elymus. That may account for difficulty in finding online information.

I accidentally killed mine by spraying weed grasses near it with Ortho Grass-B-Gon, and the little bit of mist/overspray drifting on a windy day did it. I personally love this plant, and should get some more. But, if you want it dead, this product will do it. You CAN overspray most non-grass plants with the product without damaging them -- the label gives specifics about the plants that can't tolerate it. Evergreen ornamental grasses do not require pruning or cutting back in late winter or early spring unless their appearance demands it. And that can vary widely depending on location. In my climate (and that of BOS888), evergreen ornamental grasses - like both the fescue and oat grass - look pretty uniform in appearance year round. And that's pretty neat and tidy :-) Just raking out any dead blades is sufficient. I am more inclined to cut them back (actually, trim lightly) when they start setting seedheads - those I find messy. Some evergreen grasses or grass-like plants can actually be harmed or their growth stunted or compromised if cut back hard. Best to do some research first.
