Covering asbestos floor tiles

Hello,

I have the 9x9 tiles in my basement. I want to cover them.

I dont want to spend a lot of $$ on covering them as this is the far back of my basement where the water heater is and washer and dryer and its cinder block walls so not a really nice room..

I was thinking the peel and stick tiles but if for some reason I have to pull them up I may disturb the asbestos tiles. I am also think of a floating floor.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a type of floating floor or should I use the peel and stick tiles. Or, does anyone have another suggestion?

How about sheet vinyl? Simple to install (get the kind that you don't have to glue down, just use special tape on the edges) and more durable than peel and stick tiles (no peeling up corners down the road).

There is also a sheet pvc? That is used for shower enclosure. One side flat, one side textured.

Heather- I worked as a federal regulator in the toxic substances area for many years, particularly involving asbestos problems in homes, businesses, and schools. If your tiles are in good shape, as you describe, no sealer is necessary. Asbestos tiles are only a potential hazard if they are sanded, abraded, or broken up, thus releasing the fibres. Normal foot traffic is not an issue. If you want to apply some wax, that's fine, but don't obsess about this. You're wise to be concerned about asbestos, but this particular situation does not sound like a problem. If you want more info or references on this, feel free to send me an email.

Yes asbestos. There is about 6 inches difference from the laundry room area of the basement, to the opposite wall in the back room. Nothing appears wrong with foundation, or crawl space. Thought is that it’s simply just how the cement was laid under tiles. A few suggestions given by the inspector(a retired contractor) and a separate contractor after seeing the rooms: 1: take out tiles, then start from scratch leveling breaking through the cement. 2: tile over the current tiles and live with the variation. 3: floating floor over the tiles, and then LVT. My first thought is to use an old trick to remove the tiles; flood the floor with water which often breaks the bond of the old tiles. It will take a while for the water to do its job. How long ? I dunno. BUt I have de-tiled damp slabs where the 9 or 12 inch tiles lift right off the floor in whole pieces as fast as you can pick them up. It doesn't hurt to try.

You can also use ceramic tiles over them. Mapei's Eco-primgrip applied over the existing floor before tiling. Do remove any loose tiles or tile parts first.
