It looks like herbicide damage to me. Hopefully others will chime in.

Agree. Classic herbicide drift damage. Many discussions with similar pics over on the Growing Tomatoes forum. Herbicides can drift, when the wind is right, over 1/2 mile and this sort of damage is unfortunately becoming much more common.

What is the plant that is still healthy there? I had some 2,4-d drift on my property a few years ago and it affected my grapes, peppers, and tomatoes the most.

Thanks for the replies. I did some more research and agree, herbicide damage. It sucks. For some reason it didn't effect my cherry tomatoes, they're still going strong. I'll be replacing them all tomorrow.

Please check this info about herbicide carryover in organic matter. Your compost may have some. The link describes an easy bio-assay you can do which will help determine if the problem is with your compost.
If the compost is okay, also test the potting mix.

We had similar damage to our tomato plants and thought it was my herbicide spraying in the lawn at first. But upon closer look, there were copious amounts of aphids on the backside sucking away the plant. If you don't have any bugs on the leaves, then it must be herbicide drift.

Our plants 2 years ago looked extremely similar. The leaves were curled, deformed and shriveled but it wasn't herbicide. Look very very closely at the leaves.

As Jean says, it could be either contaminated potting soil or compost, or herbicide drift. I'd set aside any amendments you used when potting up those guys, maybe plant some beans in the leftover soil and see if they crinkle up as they grow. If they grow fine, you can rule out aminopyralid or chlorpyrolid in the soil.

Hi Alex. I have one tomato plant that looks exactly the same as yours does. I live in a condo and remembered getting a notice weeks ago that the landscapers were going to be spraying the lawns for weed control, so for my plant, I think the damage was definitely from herbicide. The bottom half of the plant looked normal and the top half looked exactly like yours with severely curled/folded stunted leaves. After weeks of having hundreds of flowers and no new tomatoes setting and no new growth on the plant, I finally lopped off the top half of my Husky Cherry tomato plant, removing all of the severely deformed curled/folded leaves. Within a few days of chopping off the top half of the plant, that looks like it was affected herbicide, all of a sudden the plant started setting new tomatoes and I went from having 18 cherry tomatoes to 30. I don't see any new flowers yet, but I see a few new suckers growing. I'm guessing the plant is now able to put all of it's energy into setting fruit into wasting it on the damaged top half of the plant that wasn't doing anything. I'm anxious to see if the new branches will have normal leaves or if they'll be deformed. Pam
