Not knowing what system you have, Shaddy...all I can do is steer you to the areas that I would be able to validate a program installation on Win 7.1.

The very easiest way is to open the program and run it. But if that doesn't answer your needs....

Go to Control Panel and click on "Programs & Features". If it installed correctly...it should be listed as a program there. Also...if you click on the Windows Explorer globe [if you are on a Window's system] in the far lower left hand corner of the task bar...and click "All Programs" it would be listed there, as well. These are the quickest ways to tell. You could, also, enter "AVG" in the Search Programs & Files window and it will bring up every reference/site where "AVG" is on your system. You would be looking for the exe. file extension and/or the Application file.

Actually...I'm kinda surprised AVG didn't give you a desk top icon for your task bar...or ask if you wanted one...once it had finished installing. But...I haven't had any recent involvement with AVG so I don't know how they're operating these days.

If you're not content with the installation...or if you find it didn't install correctly...delete/remove any reference to the program and re-install it Be sure that your system meets all the system requirements for the program...i.e. enough RAM.

If you have it you will have an icon on taskbar at hidden icons, also you will see it in your programs. It is so easy to download and install, can't imagine what problem you had? And it will also come up requesting your first scan no doubt? Do not delete if not installed correctly but do uninstall and simply re-do correctly. Thanks gals, the reason I say I had trouble was that a box came onto screen, and a green slider was stuck about halfway and I thought by that time it should be done. Otherwise, I know the installation should have been easy, but then, I am one if there is an easy way, I do manage to find the hard way. Story of my life. I will do as suggested, I only see 2014 in the programs. the info that came with the installation said just to install, no need to uninstall, and click activate, which I did, and drives me nuts, I always manage to goof up something that either should be, or is easy.
As I have paid for the program, I never have any trouble after installation, and so sticking with what works for me, but I will try again tomorrow to redo the deed, and see what happens. I thought I could handle this, always get skeezy when I have to do computer stuff, I am not that literate I guess.

Also, last time install, I could get someone else to do the deed from the site, and this time I would have to pay for it, so forged ahead on my own, guess I will not do that again!

In addition to the aforementioned advice, you can open the Control Panel, then go to : System & Security >> Review Your Computer's Status.
It should show whether you have a working antivirus program.

As aputernut says, if somethings not right and you want to reinstall, uninstall it first (not delete) then reinstall.

Also you can try to download a fake virus - known as the Eicar test file - and your antivirus program should catch it. It's harmless even if it doesn't, but it's good for testing.

The only thing I'd add is that people really ought to forgo Java - there's virtually no use for it anymore, and it's a security risk.

Millions of devices run Java, I would never be without it. I belong to many senior chat rooms, where I help folks with tech problems and without Java you do not get in. Without Java you do not view Utubes and many are very helpful to people.

"Devices" are different than personal computers, which is what most people own, unless you're considering a PC to be a device.

But I think you're referring to Javascript - a completely different animal.
Youtube uses either Flash or HTML5 - not Java.

What program(s) - specifically - are you using that require Java ?

I've had Java onboard for over 10 years, and have only had to use it once that I remember, for something very non-essential. I keep it blocked in the browser for security reasons, and have never had to unblock it - for youtube or anything else.

If you're one of the few users that need it, then install it and keep it up to date, but it's not really in use anymore, if at all, so in general most security advisers recommend that people not install it.
In addition, if you're going to install it, I would use a tool to block it in the browser until needed there - something like QuickJava for Firefox.

OK everyone, FINALLY, I got the program installed, and reading the online info now, says I am covered, so that is all that really matters to me right now. Thanks to all for the comments, always good to have lots of info available, and you folks are great about sharing your time and effort to help those of us that are apprehensive about some things, and I truly am, would hate to damage something without knowing it had been done, and wonder WTHH?
