Anyone grow Mespilus Germanica Royal?
Comments (5)I was one of the people who commented on Medlars. I don't have Royal, but I do have Large Russian, which has fruit the size of a tangerine. I like it as a tree for its quirky habit, large white flowers, attractive fruit and butter yellow autumn foliage. But I have never convinced myself it's worth it for eating. One thing you need to know about medlars is that if you prune them they will grow in weird directions. I like this trait but the neat freaks probably wouldn't. If you cut a twig or branch off, the new growth will set off at more or less right angles to the old giving you a very zigzaggy tree. In my climate it has no pests or diseases but I can't speak for the US....See MoreFoliage Habit Opinion
Comments (6)i understand what you mean when you say that the foliage needs to look good even when not in bloom. that makes sense and i would agree. but who determines what looks good? i guess that all depends on the buyers opinion really? im not being snide when i ask this, but who set the standards and said that "foliage that aches is nice, while the spikey is bad?" is this an AHS thing...or just the general opinion of hybridizers? buyers? me? i like whats different, and out of the plants that we have, i tend to like both the spikey and wide foliage...just because you dont see it as often. i get bored with seeing the same old thing everywhere i look. when it comes to a distant glance at foliage only, i think different textures are very nice. at the risk of changing this topic into a whole different conversation...i want to say that i had the same question about the bud counts. someone had said that a crowded top was unappealing, while i find the explosion rather striking. i understand that in some cases each flower is not able to open to its full potential, but who set the standard and said that it is a "bad" trait that no one will want in their garden? i guess my tastes are a little different. im curious though, (choosing an extreme example here) if i set out to make crosses with spikey and wide foliage with overcrowded heads...does that mean im wasting my time, and no one would want my plants...or that my efforts wouldnt be respected in the world of daylily hybridizing? trends change all the time, i guess i just dont understand why everyone wants their plants to look the same (aside from bloom color and form). Comments (52)Maybe I've had one too many 'lingering' handshakes -- or those where the man can't just shake your hand, but also has to get up close and lay his *other* hand on you. Recently I complimented a new neighbor on his unusual dogs and asked their breed. I may have spoken to him twice before this, but he came towards me as he spoke and put his arm around my shoulder. Ick. Things like this are not 'conventionally polite'. They aren't necessarily sexual advances. They ARE demonstrations of dominance. I know how to give a firm handshake. I just don't want to touch every person I greet or to whom I say goodbye. I'm happy making eye contact and giving and receiving a smile and a nod of polite recognition....See MoreWhat is playing in my DH's head?
Comments (42)I think it could be tics. He's also been clearing his throat for years. He feels like something's dripping into the back of his throat, but he's talked to two doctors about it. They prescribed medicine that dries your sinuses, but he says it makes it too dry so he won't take it. He'd rather clear several times every minute. I try not to focus on it and sometimes I have to leave the room. He's OCD about certain household things too. Always checking behind me to see if I locked the door for instance. Today when we went out for lunch he didn't sing about Bob but he quietly hummed a few bars of the song he sings to the kitties, drummed, and fidgetted. There must be something about the environment because he's not fidgetty at other times. We (humans) are strange creatures....See Moreruthieg__tx
