You're welcome! It's not odd that cooler zones will report more fragrance from many than warmer areas. Those in the cooler places are probably smelling them when the oils and alcohols are most volatile and smell the most. We in the warmer areas often miss out because they evaporate faster as the heat increases. Also, as aridity increases, the scents burn out faster. The various components of each rose's fragrance evaporate at different rates, so one may smell very Damask at first, quickly morphing into orris or citrus, finishing a completely different scent before losing any detectable trace for the day. I went to the nursery yesterday and saw Traviata, a beautiful quartered red bloom on a very floriferous bush. I don't know why I didn't bring it home, if it's still there next week I'm definitely getting it. Sorry I can't tell you if it was a floribunda or hybrid tea, I'll check next week. It did have lots of single blooms all over, so it is possibly an HT, although you know sometimes the floribundas do that, too. As far as reds, you can't go wrong with Mr. Lincoln (but for some reason I'm not drawn to it) or Chrysler Imperial. Showbiz is a small bright warm red, a real scene stealer. I picked up French Lace, it's a hard to describe pale color fading to white, delicate and slightly ruffled. I second About Face(orange with yellow reverse, fades to pink) and Sexy Rexy (warm pink), or Queen Elizabeth for a cooler look. Elina sounds beautiful for a yellow, but I have experienced Gold Medal(bright yellow) and St. Patrick(lighter than Gold Medal), both great. If you like not too formal looks, Sexy Rexy(pink) and Brass Band(ruffled apricot blend has some pink) are fun, and Iceberg(white, stained pink in cool weather) likes to get huge and sprawling if you let it, which I always do. It looks good by itself or behind others, but it's the whole bush covered in flowers that is striking, not so much the individual blooms. Iceberg is the only white I have found that holds up to the heat, but if hot summer sun is not a concern for you then you have a lot of whites to choose from. I like John F Kennedy and Honor, and Jonn Paul II looks beautiful as well. I also saw Shocking Blue at the nursery and it was more lavender than Angel Face, but I do think Angel Face (pinkish lavender) is easier to blend in, and the blooms are very ruffled. Well, I could go on forever, but I'll stop now :) Have fun and good luck!

What fun to see all these! Of the new introductions, I think the hybrid rugosa 'Wild Spice' rates a mention! I once had a hedge of Rosarie de l'Hay, one of my earliest to bloom, and it also had a glorious clove-spiked fragrance. Most rugosas share a unique quality to their scent. Glad to see 'Parole' on the list--a Kordes also sold as Buxom Beauty, a rose which leaped onto my wish list the first I heard of it!

Seil, thanks! I'm not sure about where the OGRs will go. I'm coming more and more to the conclusion that my back yard is not a good place for roses ... unless we cut down several massive trees ;(. On the other hand, the front yard's future is uncertain. Many -- but not most -- of our neighbors have torn out all their grass for drought-tolerant landscaping: mostly very, very boring, lavender, kangaroo paws, succulents, statice, etc., etc. You've seen one, you've seen 'em all. I'm tempted to ride out this flavor-of-the-month, especially since we are supposed to get an El Nino this winter. I've been around long enough to see this kind of fad come and go, and in ten years green lawns may be the thing to have again. Of course, the last estimate to replace the lawn was $26K!!, of which our legendary rebate would cover only a fraction. My pet peeve about this is that landscapers insist on using only their "own" plants: I have truckloads of succulents, lantana and statice which could easily go up front, but why use the homeowners' plants when you can charge them big bucks to bring in your own??

The short answer is, I have no idea. I suppose we could try to redo the lawn ourselves, but sans experience, two 60somethings (one with a questionable back) could easily get themselves into serious trouble. Anyway, we are going to be out of the country for a month between June and July.

Kublakan, yes, I have stone all through this bed. First I tore up the lawn. Then I put weedcloth over everything (avoided Roundup since it would kill anything I put in there for a four-month period). Then I put in the plants, and strewed the pebbles over all exposed surfaces. I started with four roses here last year, then added four more (in the ground) this year. The rose bed is not weed-free, but it's under control... or at least right now the roses look so colorful, no one can see the weeds!

I so agree about most drought tolerant gardens' boredom. It takes a really talented landscaper to pull it off and most aren't. IMO.
