I thought about doing a SS backsplash but instead opted for continuing my honed calacatta marble backsplash behind my 36" Blue Star with grill. I went with 6" x 18" tiles to reduce grout lines and I sealed the marble. I have been very happy with my decision not to do stainless steel behind the range. If I get a splash of grease or tomato sauce, I can wipe it right down. It is hard to imagine that stainless steel is easier to keep clean. It seems to me that grease, etc. would show up more on the SS than the tile and reaching over the burners to clean the SS would be awkward for me at least because I am not tall.

sskit, I agree with Live Wire, while the concept is not new, hanging large format 2cm stone on a vertical wall should be taken seriously. Any well thought-out stone installer will know to ask the right questions and they will make certain other tradesmen are not left holding the bag after the stone is installed. Just make sure the obvious utilities are accessible and the rough in is complete and most importantly identify who is responsible for each task. Another option for the stone installer is to install mechanical clips around the exhaust opening. It�s another way to help pin the stone to the wall without having to worry about hiding the anchors. Something similar to Hohmann and Barnard #432 would work great (again I am sure your stone installer can also provide alternate options). All the best Caayu

I looked at this a while ago and have three manufacturers in my notes: Glasskote, US Color Glass, and Soda Glass. Note they are backpainted rather than letting the paint on the wall show through.

If you remove the tiles you could replace it with a stainless steel panel. It might be less expensive than and easier than tiling. The panels can be found at big box stores, made by a local sheet metal fabricator or ordered online.
