Holly leaves turning brown/black - HELP!!

I have a Schillings Dwarf Yaupon Holly shrub that has taken on some sort of disease. Can someone please help identify the problem and suggest solutions? There is a section on the lower branches with brownish/black leaves. I have examined the shrub thoroughly and see no signs of infestation. The discoloration doesn't resemble mold as there is no fuzzy or velvety coating. There are two other shrubs of the same type which were purchased at the same time and they are doing fine.

Have you had any luck figuring this out, neversink? I had someone on a different forum who suspected a soil borne fungus. His suggestion was to mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda with a gallon of water and spray the entire shrub with it twice a week.

the answer is the same ..no matter the plant .. you wait until they leaf out.. to determine what is dead... which means give them a month or two ... maine is correct.. for one with vast experience ... i use the default .. black mulch is a nightmare .. if there is no snow cover ... as it heats the soil.. in mid winter .. causing plants to go in and out of dormancy .... which is not good.. and that doesnt even contemplate august .. and what black mulch can do on 100 degrees days .. other than cook an egg on it ... if and when it comes time to mulch.. think long and hard about going without a color.. just go with the natural gray of dry old wood chips ... so.. in that equation.. if hot and dry last summer.. due to mulch.. then it went into a horrible winter ... in less than prime conditions .. so who is to tell what caused the problem??? .. if not all the variables ... all that said.. being next to the A/C makes it even worse ... with all that hot wind in the heat of summer.. they are also planted about 3 to 5 feet too close to the house... never forget.. plants are planted to HIDE the foundation.. not ON THE FOUNDATION ... these plants were planted.. as to siting.. as to the size they were in the pot.. like they would never grow again for the rest of their lives .... and they are close to a reflective wall.. when the heat is the highest in later afternoon and early evening.. on a west wall ... apparently they have been coping well for 8 years ... and something last summer ... fall. or winter did it.. my point being.. it might nall be winter damage .. though that is when the damage showed ... all that said ... i know you have the same fever i have.. but its just too early.. to make snap decisions ... just put down the pruning shears.. and step away .. lol .. ken ps: there isnt landscape fabric under the black mulch.. is there??? if so.. you might have water issues ...

Thanks for all the suggestions. The female holly was dead, dead, dead. No dormancy. Everything very brittle (ie branch would snap in half) and no signs up life when I dug it up. I actually have never paid much attention to the holly, as it was always very self-sufficient. A little Holly Tone in the Spring, as advised from our local expert gardener we hired when we first moved in. The anti-fungal was used well after the dying was happening. It was organic and on the advice of my local nursery, which has an arborist on staff. I didn't bring a twig, though, so he was only guessing. I guess I'll bring a twig into him to take a look at. Would just hate to lose my male holly. Thanks again. S

Thanks, we'll have to think about whether to cut back and hope it regrows vs getting something else in there sooner. We're definitely paying attention to long-term sizes and not just what things look like today. >"never forget.. foundation plantings are planted to hide the foundation. NOT ON THE FOUNDATION .." Agree entirely! That holly is only 1 foot off the now house because we cut it back -- the holly and other shrubs were fully pressed up against the house itself. A large cypress-y thing was even half-way up the dining room windows, pressed against the glass. Every single foot of exposed foundation around the entire house had plants in direct contact, at least during the growing season. A 20 foot-tall willow tree was planted less than two feet from the foundation, a large hawthorn tree was basically laying on top of the whole garage roof, and vines were starting to pull the electrical and cableTV wires off the house!!! Rose bushes impinged on the driveway so badly that the passenger doors of cars were inaccessible. What's odd is that the previous owner, a 60-something single man, wasn't neglectful or an invalid in general, in most ways he was decent with maintaining the house. But he apparently loved the feel of living in a jungle, totally overgrown everywhere. The interior was full huge ferns and the like.

With very few exceptions, hydrangeas are deciduous and will lose their leaves with cold weather as they enter dormancy. It is entirely normal. Discoloration of the leaves can often occur late in the season, with light frosts or heavy rainfall. Again, perfectly normal. I am a bit confused about 'dark wood' or 'losing stems' :-) Can you provide photos of the plants or parts you have concerns about? And if not that, can you let us know what kind of hydrangeas we are talking about and where you might be located? Different types of hydrangeas will look differently in winter and location could also play a factor.

if its just that one small branch.. just prune it off ... and watch for re-occurrence ...

its not powdery mildew.. so i dont know what BSoda will do

and covering the plant with a BS dusting... isnt going to really help ...

being lower... can you rule out dog... or child damage???

be nice to know where you are.. my one holly took a savage beating the last two horrible MI winters ...

It's not mold, but I wonder if it is due to the harsh winter. I had just a little bit 2014 but now both shrubs have it half way up to the top. I did put a net ( not tight) lying over the top, that snow laid on all winter.

I meant the top of the shrubs..the top half.

I'm in Greenville, SC and our winter was harsher than usual but the other two shrubs seem to be doing fine. Ken, the picture is oriented correctly and unfortunately, I can't blame pets or kids for the damage - only my lack of gardening skills. There are about 4 small branches that are affected and all of the leaves on each branch have turned colors. Some are still about half green but I suspect they'll be fully brown soon as most of them are. Should I prune all the way back to the trunk? This will leave a bit of a gap right in the front but I'm fine with it as long as they eventually recover.

show us a pic of the whole ... i am still leaning to just pruning it out.. and watching for it to come back ...

i wonder if the pic is right for you.. but sideways for me... is the brown soil??? on the bottom of the pic??? .. is this a straight down pic ... anyway ... just something wonky about it.. ignore me ... some of the leaves are not oriented properly ....
