Will the aquaponics system be for producing fish and plants?
If so, water chemistry becomes the most important aspect of a successful system.
Fish deposit waste in the water and bacteria converts the nitrogen to usable
form for plants, which in essence, is free fertilizer. When the plants use the
nitrogen, they purify the water for the fish. It’s a positive feedback cycle
that promotes plant and fish production, and the bacteria are key components.
Basically, the best way to start is to learn as much as possible about this
cycle.

That sounds like great advice. Is there anything online or somewhere else you recommend? I already give my plants fish fertilize but bought from the store. Also, the answer to your question is for both, for fish and plants. I want to start it for my plants while my husband want to raise and sell fish. I heard Talapia is the best fish for both. Aquaponics always (should) mean you're raising fish and plants together in a recirculating system. I took the "Aquaponic Master Class" in Wisconsin from Nelson and Pade and am still in contact with them. I haven't put up my greenhouse yet, but they are helping me plan the best greenhouse for my budget and environment. Highly recommend their class, an eye opening experience. So much information on the web is inaccurate. I want to invest in proven methods!
