Sunflower growing deformed

I have two black oil seed sunflowers growing from seed directly sown in soil. Four seeds were sown to thin later but i decided to keep the onky two that sprouted out. The smaller one I have had a concern for as it is curling up compared to the taller one thats growing straight up all fine. Should I let the smaller one grow or could I still cut it out to let the larger one flourish?

based on the size of the plants show at the link .. neither is going to last long.. in that pot ... so why not try to separate them now ... it isnt going to be any easier.. when they are bigger ..

maybe the little one.. is lacking the full sun.. a SUNflower needs ... and who knows what is going on under the media ...

I actually used the same pot for two sunflowers last August and they grew pretty tall, no growth fertiliser. Here are the photos http://bit.ly/1qAn1Vi .

The reason I am thinking of clipping out the deformed second sunflower is because prior to this I used the seeds from my first two sunflowers which I mentioned above to grow a sunflower in the same pot but it came off as rather short and did not produce any healthy seeds and succumbed to white sugar bugs in the end, I have photos here http://bit.ly/1Gk0Xe1

Irma, I wonder why you have had no luck with sunflowers. I plant them any time between February and October, starting them in three or four inch containers. After they start to get a good root system, I put them in the garden spaced about 18" to 24". In the spring we also get volunteers from the prior year. I usually don't fertilize sunflowers, letting them make do with what is left in the garden soil. They don't need a lot of water, but don't mind getting a regular supply. They do like full sun. For the ones I want to save seeds from, I tie a brown paper bag over them when the petals fall off. That is usually enough to protect the seed heads from critters. This summer I have been planting a new batch every two or three weeks. Due to poor drainage and my refusal to spray for bugs, not much else will grow in my garden during the summer.

Debby, you have a lovely view, even if for now it looks 'weedy' to you. I once had a picture perfect yard also, but this year, most everything seems to be loosing out to weeds. I am very little use in keeping things tidy, but I still enjoy the satisfying sounds, sights and feelings of nature surrounding me when out touring it all several times a day. Last year we left a bunch of discarded sunflower seeds from the feeders grow in the compost pile and so enjoyed the results that this year DH tilled up a strip to plant a variety of sunflowers. Got a late start due to all the rain, but there should be blooms by early to mid August.

Squirrels are the culprit around here. I have bird feeders with sunflower seeds in them, and the squirrels pick up those that fall to the ground and 'plant them'.

if i understand the question.. i would also suspect.. once it sets flowers... its probably not going to get much taller ... but thats just a guess ...ken

no reason not to just snip out the smaller.. its not really time to be transplanting something the size of the larger ..

Alright I'll snip out the deformed one tomorrow. I'll do it at the base of the soil. I'm assuming the roots will just die and start composting down allowing the bigger plant to thrive.
