questions about rosa mundi and memorial day
Comments (2)I have one of those big black UGLY-A***D nursery pots. That will be big enough. I will have to underplant with something trailing to cover the ugliness. They are very useful things thought not attractive in the least. As for Rosa Mundi, it will have to be in a pot temporarily, albeit a generous one, until I find it a patch of dirt to call its own. (Um, Dad?)...See MoreCentral Virginia Memorial Day GW Gathering
Comments (22)Robert and I have decided that this is the plan for Monday: Meet at his house at about 10:00 or so. We hope this is a good time, especially for our Northern visitors who are coming such a long way ... believe me, it's worth the trip. You've seen my photos, haven't you? At about noon, everyone will head north to my place for lunch. I know everyone will probably be famished by then. There will be plenty of time to eat, and visit, and walk the gardens ... maybe take in a wine tasting next door, before leaving for home. Plan to bring a dish to share (lunch is pot-luck). I'm borrowing tables and chairs, and I have to figure out approximately how many people to expect. Send me an email if you're coming (even if you've already done so) and I'll give you directions to Robert's house. This is always so much fun. I hope that many of you can come by. I see some Virginia people, stopping in here asking questions ... what are you doing on Monday? We'd love to have you come visit. Connie...See MoreHappy Memorial Day from Brooklyn!
Comments (6)Thanks everyone! Peachymomo, that little rascal is my nephew. While I was shooting the wisteria, he stole a tulip from his sister's hand and ran away, and stepped in my photo accidentally, which is good because it helps the viewer to guess the tree's actual size by comparing it with him. The bustopher, this wisteria is about 60 years old. When I moved in seven years ago, it looked like now, except it had leaves covered from top to bottom. My neighbor had been taking care of it, but it didn't bloom for six years. Last year my neighbor was getting too old (95 years old)and decided to let me take over. I removed all leaves below four feet, and shortened everything on top to the last two notches; this early spring I gave it some blooming fertilizer, and it bloomed! I was so happy. Maintenance is low, I consider, esp. comparing to roses. I don't need to do any more training, I just prune a lot. It sends out lots of runners, and I prune them back whenever I see them. I can either do a 10-minute pruning once a month, or give a few clippings each time I go out checking the roses. In the winter when it's bare, I would trim all lateral shoots to the last 2 or 3 notches, and thin out a bit. That's all. This tree really turns heads, even when it's not blooming. Comments (21)Vaporvac, I have Heritage and was thinking about adding them on the side of the wall where it would be nice not to have thorns. Heritage does great for me in the shade and in sandy soil. But the one I have in clay wasn't doing much, though it looked healthy, but now is growing as the weather cools off. Straw and others have commented on Heritage not liking clay and the wall has a clay foundation. Falstaff would be great except the color doesn't work, looking for pink or violet if possible. I have the other 8 ND tied up and have to admit that it looks great from a distance, though it's probably going to refuse to make flowers since it's not so horizontal now! Just measured some of the canes at 12 feet long already and I just didn't expect that kind of growth for years, not months! But 2 of them have to be moved as they are attacking people, LOL! Heirloom's site said that ND could be a shrub also but with 12' canes all the way around, that's a 24' diameter in a first year plant. It's very hard to mow around so now I'm convinced that I need a shrub. I wonder if Rein de Violettes could deal with the shade and clay? I do like your advice of Austins because I've had such good luck with them though. I do give them an obscene amount of water in the heat. Nahema is gorgeous! Oh, and I did see the beetles hiding everywhere during a very windy day yesterday, not just Memorial Day....See Moremoonie_57 (8 NC)
