Need help with my riding lawn tractor

Hi, I have a Murray riding lawn tractor (Montgomery Ward) Model TMO-3100002. Worked fine last time I used it. Now I can not get to go any faster than #2 on the speed control which has 7 positiones. Pulled the mowing deck off and checked everything that I could think of, and everything looks fine. I have noticed one thing however, the brake/clutch pedel does not return to its stop on the running board when I am running it. Can not see why this. Any help out there?

The pedal has to return rearward to allow the variable speed pulley to move into position. That would men your control has to move all the way into the high speeds.Are you saying that the control won't move past number 2 or that the speed seems like it is only about #2? It is an MTD built mower BTW.

Hi tomplum, Thanks for the come back. I can move the speed control all the way to #7 and still moves at a #2 (in fact it is free wheeling from #2 Throu #7) speed. One more thing I found out that it is a Montgomery Ward riding lawn tractor.

go to a DEALER. for 3.5 acres you do not want any machine avail at a box store. which brand you choose should be based on the dealership support avail as much as anything else. keep in mind you WILL have maintenance requirements and you don't want to have to drive 50 miles to get a new belt when you shred one on a Sat afternoon. what else do you need to do besides JUST cut grass?

i am personal to the "riding lawn mower" or rer. I have always used them until I bought my new craftsman. The only real advantage I can forsee to my craftsman LT is it has a wider cutting area. Any more i use the craftsman LT for mowing and the honda RER for all of the hauling and carting, etc. It honestly, IMO handles my garden cart better, and maneuvers better. Once I get the blade off and sharpened, it will be a bagger too.

Sounds like a job for a compact, sub -compact. You can get a belly mower that should cut good and of course the needed implements. If you find you get to heavy for parts of the lawn, that may tell a different story.

First thing to do is post the make and model number of the engine. Next I would see that the PTO switch is off, check for plug fire. No fire, disconnect the Kill Wire and see if there is fire now. Walt Conner

Possibly a spring that has let go? The center of the variable speed pulley has to be able to move up and down as well. Should you replace the belts, use the OEM MTD belts only.

Hi Tomplum, I have checked all the springs and they all seem to be OK. Not sure where the variable speed pulley is. Their are about 3/4 pullies there and I don't which one it is. Is the one on the transmission or one of the others?

If a spring should snap and fly away, there would be nothing to check. The variable speed pulley is the double pulley under the cover just ahead of the seat. The two traction belts meet there.

Hi tomplum, Found the pully. It looks like it is a big job to get it out. Do you have suggestions?

Hi Tomplum, Got the pully out and you were right, it is froze up soild. Planning on getting a new one but they are pricey. Thanks for all your help Chris

You could try soaking in a lubricant and gradually work the center free. Of course it needs to be cleaned and dry on the outside before installation.
