Have any of you QUIT your rose addiction?
Comments (51)Oh Please! I've tried the patch, the gum, the meetings... Acupuncture Inhalers Therapy Calculated the money I'd save by not buying another rose, knowing it would pay for a trip to Hawaii I've tried holding a rose without planting it Exercise I've tried mental preparation, will power, cold turkey, distracting myself, guilt, eating... I even tried to switch to chewing roses Tried to quit with a friend. Tried a fake rose Set a quit date... 24 times Nothing has helped... In the end I didn't make it to Hawaii, spent more money on the "quit methods" than I ever spent on roses and realized how many more roses I could have bought with that money :o) I now have 102 roses with yet another 2 on the way... Oops, correction: I fell off the wagon again I went to the Nursery for rose food this morning and left with "Winter Sunset" too :o) So, lets go ahead an make that 103 roses. Thus by the end of the week, if I don't leave the house that is, or visit www Heirloom, I will have 105 :o) And there you have it! The Lioness...See MoreRoses, feeding an addiction......
Comments (20)The Nacogdoches or Grandma's Yellow rose was found in Nacogdoches, Tx. It was found at the old Stone Fort Motel. I recall driving by this dump, looked like a homeless shelter. But there were these wonderful roses growing actually under a big overhang, couldn't figure out how they got water - someone had to care for them. I recall a pink, could have been Queen Elizabeth. This yellow came from there. I was just at SFA in Nacogdoches last night at a plant meeting and Greg Grant was again telling the story about this rose - really interesting history, and it is a super nice rose - non fading, grows well. Patty, had to laugh at you dropping plants off in the back. I used to do the same thing, made sure I came home from my excursions at night, slipped in, unloaded in the dark and hid them so the DH [who is now the ex] wouldn't find them. Did the same with horses. My hauler knew to show up after bedtime - would meet him on the side of the road, unload the newest acquisition, put it in the barn and he was never the wiser. Now, my SO loves plants as much as I do so no sneaking around. I drag home whatever I want and he is just amused. Going to Chamblees on Monday - don't need any more, but no way I wont come home with some! Judith...See MoreOsmanthus 'Fudingzhu' living up to its name
Comments (17)Mine are in 511 mix which does not have any nutrients as such other than controlled released fertilizer granules. So I add a regular plant food liquid at around 40% of the recommended dose once a week. I alternate plant food with with Fish emulsion and Seasol mix. Again at less than half the recommended dose. Remaining times it is just plain water. However be careful with watering if you got them in potting mix. The benefit of 511 is that I can water freely. It also washes off the salt build ups. The downside is that I have to water more frequently. Waiting to see if these guys pick up or die off. @Jasmine: Spider mites!! I thought these guys are resistant to that. Maybe regular showering saved them. Spider mites set my roses back by a month....See MoreOld Glorie Rose living up to her name
Comments (18)Rosesnsalix, you're rose is absolutely heavenly, but it's not matching GdD to my eye. I'm wondering if RU possibly sent you Celine Forestier? Are the buds pink? Do they produce buttery, possibly blushed flowers which fade to creamy shades? CF is one of my favorite Tea-Noisettes. If I could make her happy in Portland, I'd grow her in a heartbeat! Note: I could be way off here...just because I could be way off and also because I check the forum using a microscopic iPhone screen. But I thought I'd ask. Carol...See Moreseil zone 6b MI
