Help! I think my fictus is dying.
Comments (10)I usually water ficus (and juniper, and succulents and even sometimes maples) when more of the soil than less is dry, but that's generally if the tree's in fairly heavy organic or potting soil. If it's in a real bonsai mix that drains right away (and no water sits on top even for seconds) then you have to do it more often, especially if it's outside, and not worry so much about overdoing it as it will only 'keep' what it needs anyway and roots won't rot as they would otherwise do....See MoreHelp I think my Canary Date Palm is dying
Comments (31)Hi hoovb, Thank you for responding. I suppose it has but the tree is too tall for me to see clearly. My Butia which is not as tall is showing the same symptoms. The dates came and fell in what seemed to be more than usual, then one night I actually dreamed about the spear falling off. I thought it was from me reading so much about dying palms. Sure enough I went outside that morning and saw what looked like a large long yellow tail in the center of my Butia...a few days later it sectioned into parts and turned brown and fell to the ground. Now this happened on my largest palm with just the dates falling in just really really large amounts so much so that we had be scoop them out of the pool for like a week. It was about a month later that all the fronds turned brown. The Butia is so far still green....See MoreBeautiful Jade...Dying....I think....help please
Comments (4)I would add to nanzjade comment - you could use lukewarm water to wash off all the soil if it doesn't want to crumble off. Even if the roots are too dried up, plant could be saved - as long as there isn't any rot. Double check the stem by gentle squeeze (especially close to the root ball), it should be sturdy/hard. If there was rot, it would be soft & squishy and usually dark in color - I don't see that in your photo. Even cacti & succulent potting soil is sometimes very fine; you could improve it by sifting thru the kitchen sieve & keeping what remains in it. Then mix with perlite. And it should be gradually moved into good light - it looks etiolated from low light conditions. Move into more & more light every week or so, it will grow well in good sunlight. Rina...See MoreHelp! I think my succulents may be dying! Can I save them?!
Comments (17)You need to get them growing properly first before thinking of what you do with them at a later stage. If you are new to this, best keep them individually potted as they are different types, you can always group pots in a container and cover rims with stones for a group look! Whether they will pull round remains to be seen as they look pretty damaged at the moment. You won't be able to buy a soil off the shelf, sadly no one sems to sell anything that resembles a good fast draining mix, that's why we need the separate ingredients to mix together.
