OK to core aerate yet this year in central PA?
Comments (2)From what I've read, the recommended times for aerating cool season grasses are spring or early fall (September), when the grass is growing vigorously. I don't know for sure, but I am guessing that later in the fall is less desirable just because there is less time for the lawn to repair itself before going dormant for the winter. My lawn has been growing vigorously, but is starting to slow down. So I would probably think twice before aerating here in CT. You would have to judge for yourself based on your conditions....See MoreGrowing lavender in highly humid conditions
Comments (11)I've had 2 lavender plants out in my garden for nearly 3 years now, and they do just fine in our extremely humid climate. Forgive me for not remembering their names at the moment. One is Munstead, but the name of the other escapes me. Both of them are thriving and they bloom their little heads off...the scent is heavenly. I planted them a bit higher than the rest of the plants in the same bed...mixed pea gravel in with the soil in the planting holes, and I also mulch them with pea gravel. The pea gravel assists with drainage. You shouldn't have any problems growing them outside in the garden. The only advice I can really offer is to resist the urge to water them as often as you might water other plants in your garden (check the soil for moisture first, as the other poster suggested)...and don't baby them. I've never done a thing to mine except cut back a bit of dead foliage every now and then, and I cut back the wands after the blooms have faded. Good Luck with your lavender! Comments (2)i was going to say that it is important to have good drainage under the plants and to remember that they like hot and dry(good drainage) so that a stone mulch around the plants is a good idea. that said i just plunked 3 plants int to flower be next to my front steps (mostly clay) and don't do anything for them and they have survived for 6 or 7 years here in northeast ohio. diggerb...See MoreAnyone grow lavender?
Comments (19)Hello guys, I have successfully germinated Lavender from seeds.by : You have to wrap the seeds with wet paper towel, (not to suggy) it should be normally wet, put it in a closed plastic bag. The plastic bag should be placed in the fridge (Not freezer!)... Until they germinate... (check them every weekend... They should give roots...) when they do.. You plant them in peat moss... About a week it starts to grow... When it has leaves put it in sunny location, water it once a week.. That's it!! I have succeeded growing English lavender... Now I am growing : White lavender + giant lavender. They still in the fridge for about 3 weeks now.. Nothing is growing right now, I will wait more.. And see. * this is the ONLY method I have succeeded, no other will work. Thanks and good luck!! By the way growing from seeds take too much time, it takes about a full year for it to establish... It stays small plant Hope this year they will bloom eventually in this spring....See MoreLisa_H OK
