Does anyone live in Boston?

My son saved his money to take a trip to Boston. He is staying at Hi Hostel on Stuart street. He has been to Fenway for two games, a tour of Fenway, and Bunkerhill. I encouraged him to find lots of stuff to do before he left, which I know there is. He texted me yesterday and wants to come home early, but we are encouraging him to stay. He is going to a Revolution game, but he then found out how hard it is to get there. I looked on line and found where he can go to the south station and then to another station (escaping me) and then a taxi to Gillette arena. I called and the taxi has a flat rate of $21 to get there. Do any of you suggestions for a 20 yr old on a budget?

Didn't he have an idea of what he wanted to do, since he specifically saved for the trip? Maybe this will be a good learning experience about the benefits of planning ahead by letting him figure it out.

I personally like the narrated walking and city tours, especially the Freedom Trail. There's so much history in Boston. If he's not into history, that does limit his choices.

Chi83, We looked and looked at things to do and wrote many things down. Then he gets there and is not doing much. He likes doing things by himselff, but I think he would have had a better time if someone would have gone with him. Thanks for your links.

It's a very special tradition, Nancy. Nice that something good could come out of such a terrible tragedy. The Boston Globe often runs a column about it. I guess it's getting harder and harder for the good people of Halifax to find a tree that is big enough for the display and small enough to cut down and transport. Merry Christmas! Patti

I'm in southwestern CT, and I don't think you want to drive all the way down here. Plus, my Icon twins are 3 years old at this point. When I was looking, these had just come out. The dealer only had the side by side on the floor--they were gorgeous and I ordered them from the picture. The research I did implied it was a toss-up as to reliability, and since Elec had just started the new Icon brand, I knew buying them would be iffy. I bought the extended warranty, which I NEVER do, but I have had absolutely no problems--kind of like taking an umbrella to guarantee it doesn't rain LOL. I suggest you look at ANY Icon refrigerator on the showroom floor to get an idea of the quality of the brand. If you like what you see, then go for it. Hedge your bets by getting the extended warranty also. I know some people on this site prefer two fridges or a freezer in the basement, but I found I forgot about a lot of things in the garage or basement, resulting in spoilage or duplicate purchases. Well, here's the breakdown: silk dupioni, $11 a yard, + S & H interlining $ 4 per yd + S & H lining $ 3 per yd + S & H Plus pinch pleat tape. There is an economy of scale that doesn't come into play in buying materials for one project. One panel (I'll go with 84 inches long, that's common), pinch pleated, ends up about 24 inches wide, costs about $64 in materials only, not including S & H. Or any labor. Seamstresses don't "sew to save money" any more. The prices some expect to pay for "custom" come to less than minimum wage. I've started asking folks what their budget is for a project, or, if they ask about it, I tell them to expect custom to run two to five times ready-made. For that price, one can have her choice of fabric and trim, (not just the safe, easily sell-able combos a manufacturer is willing to mass-produce) She can have throw pillows to co-ordinate. Most companies will sell you a separate valance, but when my customer wanted a false valance to compensate for a shortage of fabric, I could accomodate her. When she wanted the "running deer" motif in the tapestry centered in each throw pillow, I could accomodate her.

@Patricia Collwell Consulting Patricia-question for you...I have 4K in the living areas of my house (bedrooms are 3K or 2.7K). Walls are BM Oxford white, cabinets and ceilings are BM Chantilly lace. My kitchen is open to the living /dining space, and has a flat 8’ ceiling, can size 4”. I love the 4K in the kitchen-rarely use the dimmer. The dining/living space is vaulted, uses 6” cans, same 4K looks too bright-always on dim, if they are on. Is it the can size? Wall color-oxford tends to look more gray? Vault? I was going to order 3k fixtures, with a gimbal, but not sure if it will clash with the kitchen. I wanted 3.5K but the manufacturer doesn’t make that in the same fixture. I don’t know think I can mix-match can/light...can I? Or maybe just change paint color. At the time we were building it was too much to make paint color decisions and I think I’m ready to move on from all white walls in the living areas! Thanks for any insight!

Boston is one of my favorite US cities. Every other year DH participated in a week long medical seminar and while he attended sessions during the day I was free to roam the city and mid-October was perfect for walking.

He might like the Duck boats or the hop on/hop off trollies that go all around the city with stops at most of the popular spots (Faneuil Hall, the Constitution -Old Ironsides, a tour of Boston Harbor etc. ) I'll leave out the museums!

I live south of Bodton and not too far from where Revolution games are played at Gillette stadium I think. It would be difficult to get there by public transportation It is such a great city to just walk around. Faneuil Hall, Harvard Square,. Museum of Fine Arts, walk down Newbury St. Take a bus to the Cape and walk around Hyannis, Beacon Hill, Back Bay neighborhoods all fun to explore.

My son will be home around 1:00am tonight and I think the other day I just caught him at a bad time. He has really had a good time. He was able to get to the Revolution with no problem because he saw they had a bus for their fan club, e-mailed them and they let him ride the fan club bus.
