A pretty hellebore, Casey.

This is gas plant, Dictamnus alba. The plant emits a volatile oil that is flammable. I've never tried to light it, although I've seen videos of the brief flame if you hold a lighter close to the plant.

Marcia, Dictamnus (Gas Plant) is one of my all time favorite perennials. These pics were taken about 20 years ago at my former home in Michigan. It grew very well for me there. Here in PA, I have had no luck with it. The sandy Michigan soil must have been the charm. I have tried the match thing and indeed it does very briefly flare up. That volatile oil can cause a nasty rash in some people. Very much like the rash of poison ivy. My DH is one of those who reacts very badly to it.

Gazania, those are nice ones! I had two patches of gas plant (here in PA and clay soil) but one disappeared. I think it got overrun with the lemon balm that is so overwhelming in my garden. There is a reason why gardeners have plants to share--because they spread--sometimes horribly!

Marcia, I've had the same experience with lemon balm. I paid $1 for a tiny pot of it about 25 years ago, and I've been paying dearly ever since in the way it has spread. Ditto comfrey, which I bought at the same time.
