Name That Plant!

Need help to ID plants: friends or foe? Thanks!

Someone gave me an azalea, and this plant grew from its base. The azalea bloomed but not looking so good cause of this plant sharing roots/space with it. Is this is weed? Should I eradicate? I am in MA Zone 5b.Thanks

I was given below plant by a friend, who claimed it was a "forsythia", but it has not bloomed this spring or last. Is it a friend or a foe? Thanks again.

The plant sharing space with the azalea looks like some type of Honeysuckle.

I'm almost 100% certain #3 is Horseweed (Conyza canadensis). It's one of those weeds that changes shape and form as it ages. In other words it starts out looking very different than it ultimately will look like when it blooms. I was just Googling images for this one and found tons of 'em at all stages of development. I have it my garden. It's easy to pull, but it seems to be around every year no matter what I do. Kevin

Thanks so much for all the info and opinions. GingerBlue, would geum be growing wild in my woods? although I did plant a Mrs. Bradshaw last summer that died out on me rather quickly, but it is possible that it seeded first, but that was 12 feet or more from this one. And was downhill, seems unlikely? Is there a native variety I am not aware of? So at this point we would say #3 is a candidate for Round up? #1 I don't think is Indian Mock Strawberry since I see no evidence of that type of growth habit on any of them, and wouldn't they have flowers on them by now? So maybe it is a geum? Any other opinions on #1? The alder shrub (I think that is what it is, thanks esh) I assume should stay right? As long as it is not an aggressive I will keep it as it is behind my planting beds in a section where the runoff has channeled a ditch.

Denizens of the compost eat dead plants not live ones. Japanese Beetle grubs want live roots not dead compost. Same for June beetles. OP's grubs may be from green fruit beetle. They eat dead stuff, not live. They're reliable members of Nature's Compost Crew.

Looks like a citrus fruit tree to me. Lemon or lime. Along those lines. Looks like it has been there for a long time if it is that tall. Probably planted before everything else grew up. Needs sunshine to be sure what it is. Leubafr

Can you show a close up of the bark on no.2? Forsythia is not impossible but not certain.

Thanks, here are more pictures/close ups of plant # 2. Certainly a mystery, if it is a Forsythia would it not have bloomed in the spring, young Forsythias bloom, don't they? Thanks.

Fs can lose flower buds in a bad winter ... as many did in my rural z5 MI ... 2 winters in a row ...

you cant rule out an ID based on what did not happen ...

second to last pic.. just above sure looks like F to me

Thanks Ken. Yes, good point. My other forsythias bloomed however, that's what got me thinking...

Why not compare leaves with the known forsythia?

Looks like Forsythia to me. If it's young it wouldn't necessarily flower the first couple of springs. Lenticels on the top picture are just right imo. Looking at the leaf axils I think you'll get flowers next spring unless the winter cold is too much for it.

Thanks. I guess it is a forsythia. The other forsythia bushes I have are more mature and their leaves although similar seem different. I guess I will be keeping both the honeysuckle and the forsythia.

I would pull the honeysuckle personally

If that Honeysuckle popped up by itself, uninvited, it's probably one of the invasive varieties. If so, I'd pull it too. I would pull it anyway, it's too close to the Forsythia.
