The first one might be Filipendula - looks similar to one I have.

Third looks like Polygonum pensylvanicum or a related weed.

The first is probably wild strawberry, or mock strawberry, Duchesnea indica. Depends upon how large the leaves are. If it is mock strawberry, it isn't edible and spreads like wildfire.

If the second has thorns, it's blackberry. Get the roots now unless you like bramble thickets.

The third I don't know the name of, but it's a weed. Nice dark markings, but a weed nonetheless.

The first strikes me as another of the plant world's great imposters...Geum. It starts out looking nothing like what it will turn into. See that little leaf at the bottom...how it's a little smaller and darker and shaped differently? Time will tell on this one as well, but it's my vote.

On the second, I would say it's more of a shrubby tree than a blackberry. The newer leaves on the right look something like a Rhamnus. But I don't know what it is. The coloration on the older leaves is interesting.

And yes, the third is one of the many smartweeds (Polygonum).

The second one is definitely alder (alnus species, can't remember which one), a shrub. New leaves have that characteristic burgundy tint (turns to green later). I have lots of it on my stream banks. Their flowers are catkins.

Thanks so much for all the info and opinions. GingerBlue, would geum be growing wild in my woods? although I did plant a Mrs. Bradshaw last summer that died out on me rather quickly, but it is possible that it seeded first, but that was 12 feet or more from this one. And was downhill, seems unlikely? Is there a native variety I am not aware of?

So at this point we would say #3 is a candidate for Round up?
#1 I don't think is Indian Mock Strawberry since I see no evidence of that type of growth habit on any of them, and wouldn't they have flowers on them by now? So maybe it is a geum? Any other opinions on #1?

The alder shrub (I think that is what it is, thanks esh) I assume should stay right? As long as it is not an aggressive I will keep it as it is behind my planting beds in a section where the runoff has channeled a ditch.

Geums are rather unassuming little plants that grow in the woods and in yards all over. There are lots of species and few are really much in the way of beauty. Only a couple species are grown in cultivation like the red or orange ones we know.

So will I be sorry if I leave them? Are they going to take over? Or should I hit them with Roundup as well?

Geum's typically don't grow wild in zone 7 and 8, and I have not found any native to this area (although I could be wrong). I would have to agree that it is probably a wild strawberry plant, as I have these all over.

I think the alder shrub is a keeper. It performs a role (holding that area to stabilize from erosion) and can turn into a handsome shrub.
