Connie - mine are all growing in full sun and have had no supplementaL water. It hasn't rained here in weeks and the temp has been in the 90's the whole time. I dump wood ashes on mine in January but other than that they get no fertilizer. The soil here is incredible so it could be yours need additional nutrients to thrive where you've got them. Thanks for the recommendations, everyone! Susan, Wow, you're sure a wealth of information. I'll have to research all of the ones that you suggest. I'm just not sure what I'll try now. All I know is that I don't want another huge one. It's just too hard to reach up to deadhead them, and I'm too lazy to get the ladder out every single time. Ha. eclectic, Some of those are ones that I haven't heard of yet, so I guess I have some more researching to do. I'm glad that I asked because it's nice to have a list and then to narrow it down to one (or maybe two). I hate to just throw this one away but the way it throws down seeds, maybe that's the best thing to do. Tony, I remember someone mentioning Miss Ruby before and I think I remember looking it up and thinking how pretty it looked. As long as it doesn't get tall, it's certainly one that I'd consider. I'll have to look up Miss Molly because I'm not familiar with that one. Gosh, so many choices from some helpful people! :) I really appreciate all of the suggestions! Cathy

Meadow- Have you posted at the daylily forum or just been lurking? We love to enable new people to daylily growing. Why don't you go over and do a post introducing yourself? There have been quite afew newer people who have started posting and now are regulars on the daylily forum. Just my thought but I think you would have much better luck with any trades if you were someone that we all "know" from being a regular on the forum. Were on Long Island are you? I am in Nassau County on the North Shore. I hope you do know that you can't plant your newly acquired daylilies near your ditch lilies as those will take over and you would soon have nothing left but ditch lilies.

'Lochinch' is a hybrid rather than a pure Buddleja davidii. The general behavior is for trees and shrubs to store energy in both stems and roots. With roses in particular, since these are cane growers that renew from a bud head, if there was any kind of shrub that stored nutrients more in the roots than in the stems it would be a one like this. Another cane grower, Himalayan blackberry is supposed to be sprayed with glyphosate in the fall because nutrients in the canes are being sent down to the bud head at that time. The herbicide taken in through the leaves is expected to join the procession and concentrate in the bud head, killing the initials for next year's new canes. What is supposed to be wrong with hard pruning of shrubs that may die back in winter is that the frost damage starts at the ends of the stems. The thinking is that the longer the stems during a dying back episode, the more stem will be left afterward. Unless people living in Asian hinterlands have been making USDA Hardiness Zone assignments the one used here in the US for butterfly bush is based on experience with it cultivation, on this continent. Other Garden Web chatter has tended to settle on it becoming marginal in USDA 6 (back East).
