BlueBirdPeony - There isn't one poster on this or any other forum who was born with the knowledge of how to garden without making mistakes. What Ken didn't say is there's an old adage that says something like you aren't really a gardener until you've killed every plant at least three times. Take a step back and accept that you're going to make mistakes along the way... we all have and do. I started gardening long ago at around age 5 and had great teachers in my parents & grandparents who were farmers. That just means I learned a lot early on--it doesn't guarantee no mistakes. It only means I avoided a few. 1) When? I've heard fall. A: For spring bloomers, it's best to divide in fall. For summer/fall bloomers it's best to divide in spring. Do your homework before you divide anything & keep in mind the plant needs time to recover. Dividing in the heat of the summer causes stress on the plants. Think about it... do YOU want to be running a marathon when the sun's broiling overhead and it's 95 degrees and humid? How do I know where to dig? How far out around the base of the plant? A. Get a book on perennials from the library and read what it says about dividing them. I have several that have pictures & drawings illustrating the best techniques. Won't I damage roots of other close plants? A: The chances of damaging the roots of other close plants is less if you use a spading fork as opposed to a shovel or spade. Chances are the roots of other close plants will survive whatever damage you inflict. Do I replant the tubers immediately in the fall? Or keep in the basement til spring? A: Perennials belong in the ground, not in the cellar. It's recommended that the new planting hole is already dug, watered & waiting before you start dividing. How do I know how many or what size to put back in the original spot? A: Depends on your goal--do you want the plant to grow back to its previous size quickly or are you willing to give it a season or two to recover? Does anyone want to come help me?!?!? Thanks everyone for all of your comments. I'll take some photos asap so that anyone who has ideas can offer them. We really aren't capable (anymore) of doing any of the work ourselves. I myself, have physical problems which would prevent me from doing so. My BF is just not detail oriented enough (as I have learned from watching him this past year since we took possession of the house). Seriously, he tries hard and in a pinch can take care of things but honestly it's like his eyes don't work right or something and then he gets all hurt feelings when I have to point out what is wrong; so it's just not worth it. Thankfully, because of all the work already done on the house I have people I trust. We do have another small bathroom - but it's only a Powder Room but, at least it is somewhere to use a toilet and wash up in a pinch. The shower, as I mentioned, will not be touched since it was recently redone. We don't intend to reconfigure anything for the most part - plumbing will remain in place (except for moving the tub's plumbing over a foot or so - there is room, the wall is long) and while I would really love a double sink I suspect it would mean changing the entire layout of the room including re-doing that shower; which means $2000 already spent down the tubes which would just gall me; so I'll live with the one. It's only two of us living here anyway. At least I don't have a desire to make it a show piece. It's not a fancy house, I don't need a spa bathroom. I just want something up-to-date and which works well (I put a lot of thought into my kitchen; also not a show-stopper but one which "fit" into the existing style and materials of my Craftsman home. I intend to do something similar for the bathroom.

I believe 2". All are same size piping. I can run each skimmer alone but not the main drains due to the clog.

Haha, we didn't get the snow so bad but 30mm of freezing rain and then a flash freeze was THE WORST (Halifax). All our storm drains are clogged with ice. PEI got the ridiculous snowfall (more on the way today and another one on Sunday). Apparently we're getting more rain/freezing rain on Sunday ... not exactly sure where it's gonna go. So yeah, shoveling was fun.
