Can't figure out when to plant my annuals!

Hello!

I almost always plant my annuals on Mother's Day weekend, but was out of town this past weekend. My next plan was this upcoming weekend, but it looks like it's going to be rainy, and then cold early this week. And then I'm away Memorial Day weekend. Is planting the last week of May too late?

I'm waiting until we get past next week's cold spell for the tender annuals. The hardier ones I've planted already, things like snapdragons, pansies and dianthus can take the chilly weather. You'll be just fine planting at the end of May when it hopefully warms up. :) Think of it this way: The garden centers sell annuals well into June, so a lot of people are planting later and it works out for them.

The last frost date is May 30th so I would say no way could that be too late. Many would say it is the recommended time. Many of us push the season by planting Mother's Day...most years I have only had to cover/worry once maybe twice that season.

Where did you get the seeds from were they store bought or saved? To me it doesn't look like anything is eating them it looks more like a mosaic virus. I will say that sometimes when aphids suck the juices out of plants they cause deformed leaves, but I don't think that is the cause. If other people on here think it could be a mosaic virus as well I would destroy those plants and start over. Typically there is discoloration associated with mosaic viruses so maybe that isn't what it is. Sometimes seedlings just have a few deformed leaves initially and then they seem to correct the problem somehow. I have let such plants grow only to be very disappointed with them. Whatever the cause those are examples of plants I would thin out.

I had never heard of it either, but that's definitely what it is. It did show signs of yellowing after two sprayings, but due to the heat I've been pulling the remainder rather than damaging the fescue turf with excessive herbicide treatments.

as a tree .. it should be allowed to nearly dry between waterings... you should insure that the root ball has gotten water... and then not water again until it begins to dry ... more water can actually be more harmful than to little water ... and ... as in the dahlia post.. its fall .. its shutting down for the season ... i would suggest its the effects of fall .. plus the abuse of the seller who sold it for one dollar [heck.. the pot was probably worth more than a buck] ... lol ... and the transplant ... you have done what you can ... put away the chemicals ... turn off the hose.. insert you finger about 3 inches.. and only water when it is needed ... as for the chemicals ... i have perennials... annuals ... hundreds of conifers.. trees.. and thousands of hosta ... and have used chemicals once in 7 years ... please ... cut back on your chemical use.. it just isnt that necessary ... good luck ken

In April I received a mini rose from a friend and I tried to keep it in the house for my enjoyment. However, no amount of watering carefully, full light or not kept it from declining. It started to get yellow leaves and dry up. Towards the midddle of May I took it and planted it in a big pot on my patio with some violets and gave it some rose food. It is now Aug. and my yellow rose is beautiful. It has been blooming almost since the time I planted it outdoors. I planted it on the east side of the house so it gets full sun in the morning and shade later in the afternoon and evening. Now I just need to figure out how to keep it over the cold months.
