Interplanting between rows - good idea or not?

(First post in this forum! Hello everyone!)

This is my third year doing tomatoes, and only my second one with a real, official raised-bed setup. I've got sixteen plants set up in 2 rows of 8, and some seemingly attractive real estate between the two rows. Is there anything that would make a good companion plant in this 2-ft wide alleyway? Or would shade, root crowding, watering or soil quality make this a no-no?

The thought only crossed my mind because I'm also trying Little Gem Lettuce in a low wide container - a shade-loving, shallow-rooted veg like that one seems a good fit.

Any and all advice would be appreciated. Glad that I got off my keister and decided to post here instead of just lurking and reading as I did all throughout last year's growing season. Cheers,
