Which Austin for Gold Coast QLD garden?

Hi, I live in the USA but my mother is in Aus and was wanting to get some David Austin roses for her new house. Can anyone recommend something that would do well for her? My conditions over here are completely different so I didn't know what to tell her! Her soil will be heavily amended from the natural sandy-ish base. Fragrance and not too huge were the basic requirements I think. Thank you! Bella

I'm sorry to see you got no response to this - it's a pretty slow forum, unfortunately. You'll have better luck posting your query on either the Roses or Antique Roses Forum, which are always very busy. Although most of the folks there are in the US, a few are in Oz, and if you could include some details of your mother's climate and soil, there are quite likely to be some members with similar enough conditions to be able to help.

Tell her to try Brindebella roses, they're mostly disease and fungus (aphids and blackspot) resistant, which are being grown in Toowoomba, Qld - Brindabella Rose Nursery. I'm in northern New South Wales, about U.S. zone 10 and have 2 David Austins in but both struggle a bit in the warm to hot summers. The Brindabellas are also good performers in the warmer climate.

Here's a photo of Lady Emma Hamilton, just fyi. However, my first pick for the combination of beauty, floriferousness and perfume may be Sharifa Asma. Her scent is just out of this world. For these traits you should also take a look at William Shakespeare 2000. Mine was nearly always in bloom and his richly crimson colored flowers are petal packed and exquisitely shaped. His scent is lovely sweet old rose. Golden Celebration and Crocus Rose are also beautiful and excellent performers. And another superb rose with stunning flower power already mentioned here is Molineux, although his blooms are not quite as beuatiful as those of the others. All of them are quite healthy. Thank you all for good places to start my research. I did like Charlotte when I had her years ago but the deer killed her and I'm looking for something with a little more of the gold or orange in it this time. It would be so nice if the label or the catalog would tell you how it faded! Of course that would say something like "soft ivory" rather than "grayish parchment" but "fades a lot" and "holds its color well compared to" would be helpful!

Hi hotdiggetydam, will post images after the show ok though meant to put these images up for the last year show which was held at another venue though does give a little idea of what to expect; Gold Coast Succulent & Bromeliad Society show 2009 (old venue); The next image is of part of the plant sales area for the March 2010 society General meeting (new venue where show will be held); Plant sale tables during an average meeting have good variety and quality. g'day richtrav, by normal garden do you mean suburban garden say around 700 sq/mtrs? the 'salmonophloia' is a forest tree and by my reckoning not suitable for the average garden as it would need to be app' 40 to 50 meters away from structures and utilities for safety. and the 'campaspe' not sure i'd want it in my garden either as it grows to around 35 foot. the rule of thumb with eucalypts is for safety they should be around the max height of the tree + 50% form any structures or overhead utilities, for me after living in rural i would want a 100% margin min'. there is also the duty of care to neighbours and others to consider. and another rule of thumb small trees for small gardens. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

I live in Brisbane with acidic,clay soil.I find the following Austin's do well with very indifferent care(busy family,work etc)1.Molineux2.Jude the obscure 3.Abraham Darby 4.Pat Austin 5.Munstead Wood.Hope this helps

Try firestar,

orangey pink and ruffled . Minimal blackspot and carefree . Small bush , up to 80 cm .
