Which Austin for Gold Coast QLD garden?

Hi, I live in the USA but my mother is in Aus and was wanting to get some David Austin roses for her new house. Can anyone recommend something that would do well for her? My conditions over here are completely different so I didn't know what to tell her! Her soil will be heavily amended from the natural sandy-ish base. Fragrance and not too huge were the basic requirements I think. Thank you! Bella

I'm sorry to see you got no response to this - it's a pretty slow forum, unfortunately. You'll have better luck posting your query on either the Roses or Antique Roses Forum, which are always very busy. Although most of the folks there are in the US, a few are in Oz, and if you could include some details of your mother's climate and soil, there are quite likely to be some members with similar enough conditions to be able to help.

Tell her to try Brindebella roses, they're mostly disease and fungus (aphids and blackspot) resistant, which are being grown in Toowoomba, Qld - Brindabella Rose Nursery. I'm in northern New South Wales, about U.S. zone 10 and have 2 David Austins in but both struggle a bit in the warm to hot summers. The Brindabellas are also good performers in the warmer climate.

This time I'm not posting about Gold Coat Peach's scent (which is awesome). Nope. This time I'm posting about how impressed I am with the first inflo I've gotten from this plant. Most of my first inflos have been lackluster and don't produce many blooms or they fall off quickly or even worse I lose the whole inflo. Not so with Gold Coast Peach. This baby is pumping out mega blooms! Love it...hope I didn't just jinx it by posting this. ;) -Robert

Camarillo- I have a couple Japanese cukes that are growing nicely- w/tiny cukes on them. I'm worried about the tomatoes developing the same problems as always- and I'm even trying different variety- one Early girl, 2 Momotaro and one heirloom- Siberian, I think. They look like pictures of health with blossoms and some fruit BUT!!Now I'm seeing some curling leaves w/ subtle brownish color in leaves- and a couple wisps of this white fuzz, like the kind that comes from aphid attacks on my hibiscus, which I eradicated with soap water last year... any tips? My little okra seedlings look terrible- one green, one yellow leaf.About to give up and start from seed AGAIN, in time for the hot weather they're mssing....thanks!!

Hi Dee, The golden cane suffers from the same malady as plants like Aspidistra and Oleander - its just too common. The plants themselves may have many of the characteristics that gardeners seek (hardy, reasonably attractive etc), but they are fairly uninspiring plants overall. I have several golden canes in my garden, including two that could best be described as 'gigantic', and they barely rate a second glance. I admire their toughness, and they are great screening plants, but I wouldnt put them in any position which would draw the eye. Ultimately, its horses for course - my GF loves them and wont hear my objections. You will find them gamely holding on, alone and unloved, in backyards across Rocky (ditto Oleander), but I wont be planting any more : the tropical gardener simply has too many other great palms to choose from. g'day richtrav, by normal garden do you mean suburban garden say around 700 sq/mtrs? the 'salmonophloia' is a forest tree and by my reckoning not suitable for the average garden as it would need to be app' 40 to 50 meters away from structures and utilities for safety. and the 'campaspe' not sure i'd want it in my garden either as it grows to around 35 foot. the rule of thumb with eucalypts is for safety they should be around the max height of the tree + 50% form any structures or overhead utilities, for me after living in rural i would want a 100% margin min'. there is also the duty of care to neighbours and others to consider. and another rule of thumb small trees for small gardens. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

I live in Brisbane with acidic,clay soil.I find the following Austin's do well with very indifferent care(busy family,work etc)1.Molineux2.Jude the obscure 3.Abraham Darby 4.Pat Austin 5.Munstead Wood.Hope this helps

Try firestar,

orangey pink and ruffled . Minimal blackspot and carefree . Small bush , up to 80 cm .
