That little ID tag near the base sure looks fresh for being out in the elements for two years bossyvossy. Just sayin. If it were my tree and it really has been in the ground for two years I would do several things. First off I'd get rid of the stake. I would mulch it heavily and fertilize with fish emulsion. Is the ground compacted around it? Is it clay soil? Might not hurt to dig it out and re plant it a little higher in a raised mound and mix some compost in with the soil when you build the mound. Then mulch it heavily with wood chips or straw to keep the roots cool and damp in the summer heat. Sometimes when new trees are planted in heavy clay soil they will sit like that. Finally, If it hasn't put on at least a foot of new growth by the end of this season...toss it and get another one. That's what I'd do.

It sounds as if you shocked it. But figs are tough, and chances are very good that it will recover. It is a good idea when disturbing a growing tree to give it some time to recuperate in a cool, low light, quiet area. I usually put them in the garage for about three days. If they still wilt in the cool garage, I'll remove about half of each leaf that's wilting - not the whole leaf. If there is still wilting, I prune back to make sure the roots can support the top growth as loslunas mentioned. When they come out of the garage, they go in a shady, protected spot for about a week then gradually into more light. If at any time they look distressed they go back to the previous step. The above steps are to prevent shock. If all your leaves have fallen, or are in the process of doing so, make sure the fig isn't too wet. Barely moist is fine until there is new foliage to pull moisture from the pot. If you still have healthy leaves, a plastic humidity cover as loslunas suggested, or a cool, dark place will help. As far as the "white stuff" and the "brown wilting" that you referred to initially, I think it's just naturally damaged leaves, often when the plant doesn't get enough water for a couple of days and parts of the leaves get dessicated. I've had that happen to me many times with potted figs I have in my greenhouse where I forget to water for a day or two in the summer, and I get leaf damage that looks just like that. The leaves may hang on and look bad, or fall off after a while. You had hale damage on those leaves because the damaged areas were more dry and fragile, but there doesn't appear to be anything more going on than that. Regular watering of young figs is important for the first couple of years. It looks like the leaf damage is most pronounced in areas furthest from the roots. I see a dripper in the picture, but is it possible that there was some time in the year -- even just a day or two -- when it got hot and you may not have provided enough water to the plant?
