has anyone far away from an ikea store used ikea cabinets?
Comments (3)Many years ago, when the closest IKEA was 6 hours drive, we did this. I definitely recommend taking a road trip to see them in person before you order, though. The ones we chose from the catalog didn't look as nice in person, but some we had never considered were fabulous in real life, so we got those instead. The IKEA we used had a kitchen design staff (some do not) so we were assigned one person who helped us coordinate our order. I think this is important as there are so many little parts you might not realize you need. They shipped the whole order to us in a freight truck. It was a great experience. The cabinets were great. Make sure you allow LOTS of time to put them together, if you are DIY. If you're having someone install them, see if you can get a recommendation from Ikea for your town. Many carpenters have no clue how to use the Ikea system. We assembled the boxes ourselves (since it would have negated the savings if we'd hired someone to do so) but had the carpenters install. They could not understand the Ikea instructions and ended up just screwing the boxes to the wall. I would have preferred they'd used the Ikea hager system.... Hope this helps. Comments (23)Drawers in everything that I could. Pullouts everywhere I couldn't (aside from uppers that were 14" deep), which was in my pantry. Yes, a pullout is an extra step as opposed to a drawer. But, when comparing shelves vs. pullouts, pullouts are infinitely more functional to get the things in the back. If it wouldn't have been such a budget killer, instead of my pantry being 30" wide with wide pullouts, I would have instead did pullouts that were half the width - but that would have doubled the number of glides and pullout drawers and would have been horrible for the budget. You might lose a bit due to the pullout itself, but you "gain" back real usable space at the back portion of the rollout that would be rather unusable in a deep cabinet. I saw someone who had a 30" pantry and just had shelves in there - WAY less usable space overall than what I have....See MoreIKEA cabinet - how can I make it look less like Ikea?
Comments (22)Not knowing the sq. footage of your space, it's hard to push you in that direction... my tile is just those three walls (can't see the the third) - as the sink is set into that space and stands alone. I think all said and done it was $400 for tile and labor - but the guy just came in to do this job. You'll be bidding out for more tile than just this.... so labor wise, it probably won't add much to your overall labor cost. I purchased at a local tile store - but was just in Lowes last night and they have some really pretty glass accents (like the one I used) -- if that's your thing. It just added a little extra interest. The wall where my towel holder is (to the left of the sink) was just full of water drip stains. You can't get them out. It was either re-paint every couple years or tile. As for your sink choice - I truly believe it comes down to the look you want to achieve. The all white cabinet, with white subway tiles and accent tiles would look pretty awesome. I can't imagine that the fiberboard is any less durable than the pine.......See MoreNon-IKEA apron sink for IKEA cabinet? Advice and/or info please!
Comments (22)I'm just going to say this in case - the wide Domsjö is two bowl sink. It never came any other way. Sektion has standard sized drawer fronts. Buy an extra 36" wide taller drawer front just in case you need it - you can always send it back. Sektion and Akrum cabinets had different sizes of drawer fronts. Stop by the kitchen area and ask about issues with installing the Domsjö sink in a Sektion cabinet. The Domsjö should come with replacement metal bar for the front & bar edges. The front metal bar takes the place of the top bar on the front and the back. You might need to cut down the back panel to fit under the bar. We did a simple reinforcement of the cabinet by adding plywood across the back on the inside of the cabinet under the bar and then attached the official cabinet back to the ply. Given a choice, I would buy ANY other white farmhouse sink and undermount kit. Eventho it's hundreds more. In our case, the sink wasn't quite deep enough - there was a wide gap between the sink and the wall in the back that was plugged with two tons of caulk. In the end, I named the sink the Rain of Terror because it dripped water everywhere and rotted the Ikea wood counter. If you use someone else's sink in an ikea cabinet, know that you may need to cut the cabinet top back as shown in @sh's photo because a 36" wide undermount sink is 36" wide at the front or near to it. The sink maker has an undermount kit (usually) that amounts to metal bars with screws under the sink. The bars stretch across the cabinet from side to side. Then, use your "extra" drawer front and carefully cut it to fit the front....See MoreNothing Left to Say
