Moni!-How do you find places to camp?

I want to plan a trip where my son and I camp on the Gulf Coast. I know Mississippi has Buccaneer Bay, and I got the idea that it might be fun to just travel along the coast for a week. New Orleans the next day, Mobile, Pensacola, etc. How do you find places ahead of time?

State parks. There are several on the Texas Gulf Coast. Just search for state parks. Some require that you have reservations. The ones here have areas for rv, tent, and some have cabins.

And anyone else who has suggestions. I just know Moni makes pit stops on the road while bicycling, and they look like campsites.

I would Google "Camping on the Gulf Coast." Do you have an RV or a tent?

Are you referring to a thermostat? You can take temperature readings at as many locations as you like. Plant level is ideal but as plants grow the upper air temperature is most important for controlling fans, etc. You need to place a thermostat away from doors and also out of your way- they hurt when you bang your head against them. I prefer a central location about 1/3 of the structure length from the main device being controlled and just about as high as I can reach. If you want to use a remote thermometer to measure temperatures at plant level, at eye level and outside the structure at 10 minute intervals you could publish your findings but what really matters is that your plants don't die from frost or cook. Readings in full sun aren't reliable and without any form of air circulation within the structure you might want to be looking for a corner as a possible cold spot. However, with the crops you mention, if they are well established you will only have setbacks in growth with cold temperatures so The excessive heat would be your greatest concern. Since that can change drastically in 15 minutes once the sun shines you likely want to know when any area starts to get above 90F. Much higher you might have some losses.

I've put them in various places from: -against the foundation, South side of the house -out in the open on the driveway- south side of the house -out in the open on a table- North side of the house Cap...you mean the little one on a milk jug? Throw it away. It's not used. I typically don't move containers, and they usually don't sprout until the snow/ice season is over. If we have a rogue snowstorm in April, oh well. It's not likely that too much would get inside them, anyway. Because our change of seasons can be pretty erratic in the weather dept, there might be days that get up to 70 and I'll take the tape off my sprouted containers and flop back the hinge so they don't fry during the daytime, then flop it back over at night if the temps haven't consistently been ~43+ (that's my own personal degree mark). This might go on for about a week until the temps are more stable. But this on/off thing is not something that everyone does, nor is it "routine." I just don't want my containers heating up to 90 inside and killing my seedlings (I also go by the container temp can be 20 degrees higher inside than the air outside, so when it's 70+ outside, I don't want to kill them (btdt one year- oops!))

Tami, I didn't follow a recipe, but here's what I did: Sauteed a medium onion, chopped, in about 2 tbsp. olive oil. Added a large clove of garlic, minced, and several shakes of marjoram. If you want to add pepper, add it here. (The herbs/seasonings can certainly be varied, depending on individual taste. Rosemary is good, or something spicier.) I stirred in a cup of barley, and then added a can of chicken broth plus about a quarter-cup of water. Bring to a boil, covered, then simmer for a half-hour or more. Test the barley for doneness, and add a medium head of broccoli, chopped (not finely), when the barley is almost done. Add a little water if necessary, and continue to cook, covered. It's a good idea to stir a couple of times while it cooks. Keep an eye on it so the broccoli doesn't get overcooked. A little salt might or might not be needed. Hope you like it!

I study all maps I have along for camping spots listed (usually AAA map, state map I pick up when I ride in, and lately google search). I look in a 40 to 65 mile distance from where I spend the night. Sometimes I also go in to libraries and use their road atlas (way lighter than hauling one). Yes, Raven, state parks are GREAT, but some don't have showers... or bodies of water (stream, lake, river) that one could use to rinse off road grime and sweat.... Plan B is take a cheap motel. ;)

edit/adding

there is an organization called Warm Showers, which is run on a volunteer basis for cyclists by cyclists that might have a member located where I need one. I am on this list, which then entitles me to stay at another members house, and use the hospitality they offer. Always a warm shower, sometimes just a spot in the back yard to pitch ones tent, often a spare room (the latter is what I offer) and often a meal cooked, or the option to use their kitchen to cook.

These are all great suggestions! I'm thinking about doing this next year. This year's vacation is DC. I'll have time to go and study things.

I want to do it with a tent. When I was little, we lived in California, where we camped a lot in Big Sur and Yosemite. There is just something special about as little as possible between you and the air.

DC, my daughter and I stayed in a youth hostel there... cheapest accommodations we found. Bought a metro ticket for a week, and had unlimited transportation. Had a GREAT trip.

I found it! I think. I'm excited. St Joseph State Park, FL I've decided I just want one place to go rather than a bunch. But this place looks like an outdoor adventure!

Omg I absolutely love that place! It's truly amazing. It is on our go to soon spots list along with Grayton state Park one of my all-time favorite places.

There's an rv blog that did a great review of your spot!

rvparks.com is where we go when camping in our motorhome. Some campgrounds allow tents.

It's been "rated top beach in the nation in 2002 and best State Park in 2012". So you aint even lyin' raven!

If yoi want to camp near Washington DC I reccomend Greenbelt Park.

koa had bikers, and motorcycle when we were in south bend last month...they had rented one of the cabins, but another pitched those streamline tents....we usually chose the "name brand" places just for convience....esp now with the monster dh bought...aaa if you're a member has camping books, as does koa, online, too...places like Yellowstone had restrictions as they do have wild animals who can rip to shreds a tent...

and as mentioned every state almost always have campgrounds. however, they can be filled early, so suggest planning back up....
