Honeycrisp...$1.25 an apple
Comments (49)This hype around the Honeycrisp reminds me of all the marketing hype around the Dekopon (Sumo) mandarin that was introduced this season. Huge, huge mandarins, seedless, and easy to peel. Taste-wise? Okay. Not exceptional from store-bought mandarins. Off the tree they were much better, but still not as good, in my opinion, as two other commercial varieties, the USDA 88-2 (Lee x Nova cross), or the Gold Nugget. Or, nothing near as good as the non-commercial Seedless Kishu variety. It really is all about trying to support growers who have made a significant investment in buying the trees and growing them for that first commercial crop. I'm sure there is something similar going on with the Honeycrisp. We are supposed to now have them in our local supermarkets, so I'll buy one or two, just to see what all the hype is about. I am going to try to grow my own Honeycrisp, so we'll see if it sets fruit, and if so, what the quality will be here in my lower chill hours area. Comments (19)Serge, Your best bet would be to buy a mandarin tree locally and topwork it to USDA 88-2. I live just south of San Jose and that is what I have done. My USDA 88-2 tree is now in the ground. Now I'm taking this approach to make myself a Boukhobza blood orange tree and a Wekiwa tangelo tree. I will be happy to teach you. This approach makes it possible to get the rarer varieties relatively quickly and without the risky movement of citrus plants. Whatever you do, you don't want to drive down to Southern California and bring a tree home to Northern California; it could have Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) adults or eggs -- they are so small that it would not be obvious even if you were looking for them. One might think that nursery trees would be free of the pests, but it was actually the nurseries in Florida that helped speed the spread of citrus greening throughout the state. The authorities in California have learned from the lost war in Florida, but California is in a vulnerable time period now. If ACP were to make it to Northern California it could enable a breakout of Citrus greening. Comments (35)Yes, Honey is extreme, and known to be extreme. My Seedless Kishu has its first fruits this year, but every year at the UC Riverside Citrus Collection, their Kishus have been loaded. Same with Tango. Gold Nugget is probably the most likely of the three you mention to show some alternate bearing, mainly because, I think, the fruit will hang exceptionally well on the tree, so you might leave the fruit on and use it as needed. That can cause a tree to alternate bear. Pruning every season just a bit can help stimulate more fruit bearing branches, so that can stop the alternate bearing if you start to see that happening. Or, removing the fruit within a reasonable amount of time. Also, cultivars that tend to bear very heavily can alternate bear if not thinned. Page mandarin can do that, and even the illustrious Meyer lemon if you don't pick the fruit regularly (I forced mine into an alternate bearing state the first year I moved into my house due to the enormity of the amount of fruit on that tree). The satsumas tend to be more alternate bearing as well (sort of famous for it), also, but since you don't have any, no worries there. And, Valencia oranges also will alternate bear, again, because the fruit can hang on the tree for so long. Patty S....See MoreHave you reach your ultimate collection?
