How many have you in your collection? What are your most priced ones, not necessarily in taste but also accomplishment in looks, sort like" i wish all my tree's looks like this one".

Kate, I'm up somewhere around 200 give or take a few. That's plenty for me while holding down a full time job, with a DH who is becoming increasingly disabled and with bad knees myself. I am only mid-50's; DH is 5 years older, but I suddenly *feel* old this year. Florence, you and Bob are wonders with all the health issues you have worked through and still garden the way you do. You grow beautiful roses - in spite of all the shade from the trees you also successfully grew! ;-) Carla, I will definitely post pictures next year when everything is smoothed out and seeded. I think it will be a nice spot for a bench, too, so I can sit down there surrounded by roses on 3 sides. I'll show you what I mean next June. Karen, we were just talking about weeding out unsatisfactory roses to make way for any new varieties that we covet, weren't we. I know you understand where I'm coming from since our rose gardens are very similar with different levels spread out over a large area and comparable numbers (although I think you have me beat on perennials!) Len, I too can forsee getting to a point where I will not be able to care for all I created - and that includes not only the gardens, but a large house as well. That's where the friends Karen is talking about are at right now. They've just got more than they need and it has become real work to care for it all although they certainly have enjoyed their years there. The trouble is that everyone who sees their property oohs and aahs over it (it is just like a park) but someone looking to buy gets scared. It will take a very special (and young!) couple to take over that garden, or sadly it might have to be ripped out and seeded over with grass to reduce its intimidation factor in order to find a buyer.

Wow, great ideas! I like your combinations, Robin. And it's a great idea to have a lot of one type of Salvia to focus an area, Westelle. Also like repeating plants in the areas you can see. I guess my problem is that I have several collections and I am starting by growing one or 2 plants of each - to see if I like them. That adds up to a lot of "specimen" plants. One of the problems is that my beds in the back are mainly long perennial beds with no bones to speak of. The front yard looks better cause I had a plan for the bones & just added perennials where they'd fit. Actually that is the area of more steady temperatures. What a great explanation of micro climates, Rich. That is totally my problem. The back of the house faces south to southwest. Plants that look fine in the blazing sun one day will shrivel up & die the next. I need to be careful to shade them for a bit of time when they're new. I have most of my beds in full sun at the rear of my house & a long side border which gets afternoon shade from my neighbors at the top of the picture's pines. I am in the low area & I have a slope going up to my neighbors in the rear. Actually there are a couple of swales running across my yard dividing the slope. Those areas can be like a river during a storm and then dry out pretty well the rest of the time. The slope is facing the house thus northeast but is not very steep & with no trees to shade it, it is in full sun for most of the day. That's in the summer. In the winter there seems to be quite a bit more shade as the other neighbors also have pines. This picture is from Microsoft TerraServer - taken several years ago, before any of the beds in the rear were created. The top of the picture is north. It is set with each side being exactly North/South/East/West. The large thing in the rear is a swing set with maples shading it. One day that may be a screened pagoda(in my dreams). Currently there are beds along the houses rear & sides & one long bed by my neighbor's pines to the North (on the picture). The arrow shows the hill & the curved line shows the major swale. I had an idea to do a rock bed at the bottom of the swale where the yard is level. The area on the curve after the arrow. The yard is 2/3 of an acre & I already need help maintaining the beds that are there, so I've been concentrating on doing the beds I can see from inside the house. As I acquire more of my faves, there is the need to create more beds. I have a large Lespedeza thunbergi "Gibraltar out on the hill facing my deck. Ideally I would terrace the hill a bit. Instead, I have slowly planted into the hill. It is quite overwhelming. You can't see the trees we have put in, mainly on the borders to block the neighbors. I also like the idea of some water feature trickling down the hill, but it would require quite a lot of work to make it look like it was there when we arrived. The land was somewhat barren with no trees when we moved in because it was cornfields. I've been reluctant to have any trees near the house cause I love the way the light streams into the windows all day long & I love planting sun plants. It does get rather hot out there midday & the mosquitoes are like you've never seen(or maybe you have). It doesn't help that the swale water empties into a stream a few backyards away. In high mosquito season, it is so hot & buggy, I view the garden from indoors. Well enough of my dilemma, I need to figure out exactly how much time & money I want to spend on this backyard. I sometimes have to use a step stool, but not to often---even though I'm just 5'2". I have compensated by taking advantage of the adjustable shelving. I figure out what I want on the bottom shelf and then set the shelf to just clear those things. Then I do the same on the next shelf. Therefore, the top shelf ends up lower than it normally would if it were divided in three even sections. That little bit seems to be enough for me to get a finger hold on whatever is on top and pull it off the shelf. Also, I tend to put things like drinking glasses and stacks of items on the first two shelves; the top shelf generally holds things like larger serving dishes that I can pull off the shelf if I can just reach the front edge. Your mileage may vary, depending on what you store in your upper cabinets.

Best tasting (in my personal opinion, which is very subjective) Mandarins: Satsuma (from a mature tree, takes years to develop full flavor) closely followed by Shasta Gold and Kishu Some people also really love Page (the aroma reminds me of pine needles, not in a bad way) Minneola Tangelos are of course a classic For oranges, Valencia is the one and only (if grown in a warm climate, because in cooler climates it may not develop full flavor and sweetness) Grapefruits: Duncan has "classic grapefruit flavor", the gold standard by which to measure grapefruit flavor (but is a bit seedy, and some people complain of grapefruit bitterness) Oroblanco is sort of like a milder version of Duncan, less bitterness, but a tiny bit less aroma also, still a great one. It's sweet, and even many people who don't care for grapefruits still think Oroblanco is okay.

Bob, I have 7 varieties of citrus ( can't have more due to shortage of space), but will make exception for Shiranui. I wish all my trees looked like my lime tree :)

My ultimate collection won't be reached until I can successfully over-winter a lemon tree. I got a Meyer through last winter but it wasn't in any condition to fruit. Increasing the light this winter seemed to be the wrong move. Anyway, I'll continue to experiment and hopefully find the right mix of temps and light one of these winters.

My current collection: 1 Yuzu, which looks way better now than it did a year ago and even flowered at some point over the winter on just one branch; and 1 Rangpur, which doesn't look great but has definitely looked worse in the past.

I ordered a lot from Harris and FWG for this year but am shifting primarily to trees that can (mostly) be outside year-round in my 8b climate.

Outside Trees: Xie Shan Satsuma on Trifoliate, Sudachi on C-35, and Calamondin on Kinkoji.

Inside Trees: Bearss Lemon on Sour Orange, Harvey Lemon on Trifoliate, and Seville Sour Orange on Kinkoji. I don't intend to keep both lemons but am instead being realistic about their chances of survival next winter and I wanted to compare a tree on trifoliate to a tree on sour. I also have some lemon and key lime seedlings I'm just using for science experiments.

Ideal for me given current space constraints would be: Yuzu, Sudachi, Calamondin, Sour Orange, Key Lime, Xie Shan, a Tangelo (either the mysterious white tangelo Harris is carrying or a Sugar Belle), a Pomelo, and a Lemon (or two!).

Hahaha I would need a lot more space to get my ultimate collection. There are so many unique citrus and fruit trees I would love to have if I had unlimited space.

myermike that pic was taken in Jan I think, I made Meyer lemon bars. Used the juice for a few things as well. the shelf yes I built specifically for my citrus, it's a temporary solution I'm planning on having a Florida room built for my trees. This window in my kitchen is the only decent south facing in window in my house. And lastly the lights are 2 daylight spectrum led strips for a shop or garage.

I'm always reading about all the different varieties everyone has and lusting after new trees. I love seeing everyone's pictures and researching different varieties, but for me I want to keep my collection to things I'll use and truing enjoy eating.

I could easily get another 5-8 lemons trees (Meyer , Bearss 2x, Lisbon, Eureka, NZL). My goal is to extend the harvest to have lemons ready to eat for as many months of the year as possible and freeze the extra. I'm hoping my two limes trees will supply enough limes, I don't use nearly as many. I'd also like at least another 5 mandarins and I'm always going back and forth on varieties. Probably a GN and Shiranui, and something that ripens around December. Maybe the xie shan, since everyone seems to sing it's praises. I've never seen one for sale, though. Or a sugarbell, yosemite gold, nules, lee x nova? Someone please just decide for me! Plus, non-citrus such as olive, mulberries, blueberries and many more once I get a house.

My fear is that they'll become to much to care for. Some times the trees and plants I have now start to feel like a chore to take care of and I don't want that. It's easier in summer, of course. Hopefully, in a few years I'll have a house with a heated sunroom and I won't have to worry so much in winter. I'll take as many as I can adequately care for. I don't know how people like Laura do it with all those trees to take care of. I spent 2-3 hours every weekend, watering and 'checking in'.

Nick - What is the Yosemite Gold like? When are they ripe? I was contemplating this one. Anyone else have one?

Amy - What are Sugarbelles like? Seedy? Easy to peel? When are they ripe? What about your nules? I haven't seen anyone else mention then, but they sound good. I'd love to get my hand on an Orri or Ruby tango! Is it even possible?

Bob - Someone, probably you has mentioned great things about the lee x nova. What is it like? When is it ripe? Is this something to consider for a container grower? When is the xie shan ripe and is it appropriate for containers?

PacNorWreck - How long have you had your Bearss and Harvey lemons? What are the differences?

Alanna, i don't know nothing a bout the varieties i grafted in January other than reading a lot of those. There are very knowledgeable citrus people on different forums, especial the guys from California. They have access to stuff that is not available to me but somehow i got what i want.

The top picture is a Xie Shan in a container(Harris Nurseries) yes, go for it . The problem with this tree, it fruit every other year because it want to overbear, just look at that tree, a million flowers.

Hi Alanna,

this hobby is so so addictive! There is so many varieties available and they all have something special.

Ok about Sugar Belle: it’s a cross between minneola and clementine. Great sweetness balance with good acidity. It’s supposed to be ready by december, earlier than minneola. It also has 40% more vitamin c than minneola. If you like minneola you will probably love SugarBelle! If you live in area affected by hlb, this variety should be tolerant to greening. I bought it last year from floraexotica which got it from harris. I preorder another one this year from brugmansia-quebec wich will get it from briteleaf.

I just got my nules clementine last fall so there is not much I can say about it right now. It’s just seating by my window right now doing nothing.

Alanna, I must confess that I have the habit to crush the fallen leaves from my trees just to smell the scents. The best scent is from my shiranui! Very very intense! If the leaves smell that amazing imagine the fruits!!

I bought some regular Orri mandarin (label said orri and they are not orti jaffa) from an asian supermarket and they were really really good. It’s one of my top mandarin. Very big, firm but with a lot of juice and very sweet. I did a bit of research and the information is so confusing. Some said that is a cross between temple and dancy. Some said is a seedless ortanique. What Iknow for sure is that it’s a patented variety.

For ruby tango, it’s a cross between a blood orange and tango. Can you imagine how beautiful the fruits can be? In my research, I found a few european nurseries which carry it but no one in North America.

Amy - I also enjoy smelling the leaves. I always rip them up and sniff, then I let my dog sniff. She doesn’t enjoy them as much. I think the lime leaves smell exactly like lime fruity pebbles! To me, my orange leaves smell like peppers...it’s really weird.

I’ve seen ruby tangos and they were beautiful and big too. Ive never had an Orri, but from what I read, they sounded fantastic and highly regulated.

I’m sure there will always be new varieties I want, but I feel the need to get started right NOW!, to give new trees time to fruit. So I keep trying to decide on new mandarins. Too many choices...

Bob - I didn’t see Xie Shan on the Harris website. Maybe I missed it or they don’t have it right now? Your tree is beautiful.

Let us know how the new ones do. The reviews I need here are most helpful in deciding what I want.

Alanna. Harris had a great selection prior to the hurricane. I don't know if that is why they don't have a lot right now or not. Xie Shan was on my list and they had a good price on them. Hopefully they will get their stock back up.

Harris often has things available that aren’t on the website - you just have to give Ruth a call. That’s how I got a Xie Shan this year.

I’m afraid I can’t say much about Harvey and Bearss yet - they arrive next month from Harris! Harvey is supposed to be a grocery store lemon, just more hardy than Eureka or Lisbon (especially on trifoliate). Bearss is supposed to be a very vigorous variety with large fruit and lots of oil in the rind - it was selected in Florida but was said to resemble a Sicilian lemon that was grown around that time, handling the heat and humidity of Florida better than Eureka.

Quick Edit: For Amy or anyone else that's had a Sugar Belle - does it still taste like a tangelo? I love Minneolas because you can definitely taste the grapefruit heritage; not sure if I'd grow Sugar Belle if it was just another sweet mandarin.

I never taste the SugarBelle myself because I just got it last fall but from several articles, I understand that it’s sweet-tart fruit with a tangy punch!

Alanna I haven't tasted a yosemite yet but I will this season. I stopped by my local nursery this moring for pine bark fines and strawberry plants and couldn't resist adding an Oroblanco Tree to my collection. She is a beauty and will give me some nice fruit this fall. I will be transplanting it into a larger container soon.

I think we may be maxed out, but you never know. We have 13 - Eureka Lemon, Valencia Orange, Navel Orange, Honey Mandarin, Satsuma Mandarin, Algerian Tangerine, Calmoundin, Meiwa Kumquat, Bearss Lime, Key Lime, Sweet Lime, Persian Lime, Kaffir Lime. We have been unsuccessful growing Meyers lemon and a grapefruit. We prize the honey mandarin, but the eureka lemon and the key lime are the most productive.

I reduced the size of the 4 ancient trees from their original 20-25' diameter to 12-14' diameter and brought them down gradually to 10-12' high. I intend to do the same with the Minneola. I'm getting too old to want to be on ladders and the goal is variety not quantity.

The Kishus, Pixies, and Kumquats are in pots in the front yard for the neighborhood kids.

The Meyers, Gold Nugget, and Bearss are espaliered along a side wall. Bearss or Meyers in the ground and left to grow will bury you in fruit.

The 1/5 acre is the area behind my pool that was the original grove. I have the four different varieties of Bloods on 9' Centers between the two old Valencias that are 40' apart.

Here's a pic of where I was planning the spacing of the espaliered trees for the east side yard. I dug down to find the original ground level so that the wall is its intended 5.5' tall but still wanting to gain some privacy as the houses are only 20' apart on the sides. The plastic is protection as that was just before a predicted huge rainstorm:

Very cool Greg. Thanks for sharing. We have good friends in Upland off Euclid and when visiting, I am always pleasantly surprised by all the citrus I see growing. We are at a point of producing too much, and like you we would prefer variety over abundance. We may slowly look to reduce the size of some of our bigger trees to allow for that.

Container growing here (though I'm experimenting with an in-ground Owari satsuma soon), so the collection is reaching capacity. I've also got a Tango, sweet lime, and some key lime seedlings. I've got a pummelo coming sometime this spring, and a Santa Teresa hopefully coming next week. I also added a couple avocados, a mango, and coffee trees seedlings recently. Not sure which is my favorite, but my oldest and most babied is my ~14 year old Meyer. I'd like to add a NZ Lemonade if I can find one. And then whatever I come across locally that I can't resist. :)

I really need to stop now. Today I ordered a 3gal New Zealand Lemonade, in addition to the Santa Teresa and Tahitian Pummelo coming soon. I also got some ripe calamondins from my neighbor, so I can plant the seeds. I really think I should stop there for a while...unless I plant a yuzu in my yard...

This winter I signed up at OGW for a spring 2018 order for a 1 or 2 gallon Bergamot, which has been on backorder for a while. I was browsing their website a week ago and noticed they just got the 1 gallon back in stock, so I quickly placed my order. I did not receive an email alert from them, but was told that they would have a few back in stock soon. They had only six in stock..So I am over the moon with joy after waiting for almost 2 years for one. They will ship out this spring.

I guess I am not done either. Since I posted two years ago, we have added a Eureka Lemon, Meyer Lemon, Pixie Mandarin, Key Lime and a Fukushu Kumquat. They are all in large pots getting ready to be transferred to our other home. We are considering moving there after we retire, and realize that mature fruit trees are a requirement for us to move.
