I Have Mini Pots... Now I Need Mini Plants
Comments (9)I purchased these for $5 for all three. Yes, there is indeed a small hole in the base. I checked before I purchased them. I had never thought about it getting blocked. For the mix I will use either the 5:1:1 or Al's gritty mix. I need to look at the size of bark needed in the gritty and see if I have it or can find it. I looked on both the Violet Barn and Meehan's website and I am thinking about a mini violet for one, and maybe X-Codonotanthus Sunset and a succulents that resembles stones for the other two. I will have to wait till the weather is a lot warmer to order anything online. I did see some tiny pots of Baby Tears at my local grocery store. Purple, I have been following the small plants discussion and that is why I even considered buying these pots. I love the photo there of the mini African Violet. Tapla, I have always loved your picture of the hen and chick in the tiny jar. I might have to try one indoors and see if it would make it. I have many different hens and chicks outside and I miss them during the winter. I have a bright green one that stays very small no matter the amount of room it has to grow....See Morewhere to buy Succulent seed?
Comments (8)Hi boston, I just recently ordered from Silverhill seeds, but it may take a while. They are advertised as fresh seeds as they are collected from the wild I believe. Ebay has alot of choices, but I question the viability of the seeds (I've only bought from one source here and they were pretty good - but I cannot speak for ALL types of cacti/succulents however: I mostly buy stapelia seeds) You can also join societies like International Asclepiad Society or Cactus and Succulent Society of America as they have seed depots. For the former, you have to be a paying member and they publish their seed list once a year, for the latter, you don't have to be a paying member, but you will have to pay more. I tried contacting Mesa Gardens regarding their seeds, but I got no response. Anybody know of their current standing (if they are still selling seeds)? and with seed germination, I live in Canada, most of the seeds germinate quicker for me when the weather gets warmer. I tried sowing during the winter times indoors, but it was too damp and cold and I had to provide lights. I was not successful at this. But when I sow during spring when it is more warm (both indoors and outdoors) I have a higher germination rate. This might have to do with viability of seeds but you also run the risk of your seedlings wilting during colder periods. The type of soil you use is also important - a lot of factors must be considered when starting from seeds for me as I have the cold weather to deal with also. Hanzboro - thanks for sharing your picture! I love it, I like looking at a group of plants and just looking at them pot by pot for some reason lol....specially the one in the blue pot. What is it? It looks interesting. Your plants don't look like indoor plants...I am used to seeing most cacti and succulent as indoor plants up here, your pots of cacti/succulent look like pots of perennials that you would normally see up here. Comments (20)I made hypertufa rings to set in mygarden. The edges of each ring stands about 8 inches above soil level. No bottoms, just the rings. My husband cut out the molds from a heavy black plastic tapered nursery plant pot by rolling it along the blade on his table saw. One ring from the top of the pot and the second ring from the bottom of the pot so there was about a 2-3" space between the two rings where I packed in the hypertufa mix. I laid the smaller ring inside the larger one on a piece of plywood covered with heavy plastic so nothing stuck. When cured for about 6 months outside in the weather, I set rings into soil and planted them with hostas and sedums. All thrived, I think because they could grow into well draining soil rather than into a container with a bottom. Even with drain holes, I think they still accumulate too much moisture in the winter for some hostas. One could make these planters square or round. Carve a design in rim and outside when dry to green stage, about two days after molding them....See MoreMaking succulent pots/containers
Comments (50)I concur with Rina. Just because a pot is billed as a "bonsai" pot, for example, that hardly means it is unsuitable for cacti/succs. Media choice and cultural practices will play a major roll in suitability. But if for some reason you must have a tall skinny pot, then you try a cymbidium pot:. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tall-unglazed-clay-orchid-pots-with-beautiful-oriental-design-handmade-/252426554962?var=551279703083&hash=item3ac5cb8e52:m:mWGRcKJgrcDeAmiJ9qdAAiw Or visit a website like: http://www.hayneedle.com/outdoor/planters_material-clay_list_187730_12407?source=msadcenter&kwid=terra%20cotta%20pots&tid=modbroad (Scroll down a few rows). But do keep in mind that you may have to pay considerably more for such....See Moredocmom_gw
