Landscape Design -- Modern Home

Please find the front and back of this home under construction in Indianapolis, IN and suggest a landscape design. At this point we are not sure to go ahead with Porch columns or should use landscape to augment it. We are considering concrete full size steps and a curved walk way to the Front door.

Also notice that there is nook/groove to the left of the block of windows?

Wanted to see if a good magnolia or a flowering tree would look good?

The home is south facing and we were planning on doing some low maintenance shrubs with pebbles instead of mulch.

We will be meeting our landscape consultant soon and wanted to go a bit prepared.

If you are already going to be meeting with a landscape consultant (a professional, I assume?), why would you need to get input from an online forum with more hobby gardeners participating than design professionals and even those with no real sense of the property or its surrounds? ? Experts? Maybe a few, but you are already going to be paying for an 'expert'.

If your person is at all skilled in design they will give you all the input you need. And site-specific input as well. And you are paying for their time and advice as well. Just tell them things you like (flowering tree, low maintenance plantings) and let them take it from there.

Thank you I will do that. I just wanted to be better prepared .. also I am not sure if that person is a landscape designer. These forums have provided valuable feedback to me in the past ..

I believe it now. The original pictures were not detailed enough to explain the pavement. You will not get the look of new pavers without actually replacing the drive with new pavers. IMO, your best, cheapest possibility is with driveway paint. Since it would not cost anything near what a new driveway would cost, and would look much better than what you have now, I'd consider it a viable alternative. But you must only use paint for concrete/driveways, not floor/porch paint. I would pick a color darker than you think you need. It will lighten over time with aging by the sun, but more importantly, if too light it will cause much glare ... to the point where you can't look at it.

What an amazing home! Yes, I have seen that last photo's home tour before and loved it! It's what I first thought of when I was reading your vision. I think some black grid windows will look fantastic. I would also eliminate the rod iron Juliet balconies. I don't think removing them is diminishing the Spanish style at all. I wouldn't paint the brick. I think anything with the terra-cotta color is a huge plus. Down the road, a terra-cotta tile walk would look amazing coupled with a white stucco pony wall in place of the brick! I would remove all the shrubbery and focus on adding in succulents, which do well in the bay area naturally. Succulents will add in that soft green color that coordinates so well with the terra-cotta colors as well as add dimension and a sculptured element. I would leave the garage doors as is. Hope this helps!

If someone is doing landscape design for you, you should be familiar enough with their work to know that you like and respect it. That will give you confidence that they can do something similar for you. If you are unfamiliar with their work, then it's a crap shoot. There are plenty of pros delivering mediocre work. If you're not sure if they're a landscape designer, you had best do some research. Someone who is primarily an installer may do a so-so design.

Landscape is about setting, which is what's missing from your pictures. We can only see what's in front of the house. If you returned to the place where the above picture was taken and aimed the camera left, then right, showing the homes at each side, you could capture the rest of the view.

Your large entrance area and the roof over the porch has architectural integrity and looks complete. I don't think any columns are necessary or desirable as they will tighten the opening. I like the idea of large, full porch and steps. I would do a derivation of an "S" curve and keep the walk away from the house so as to have proper room for plantings. The way to cheapen look of plantings is to have tightly pinched beds that are unrealistic for plant size.

Yaardvaark: Super thanks for all your feedback. I was exactly looking for this kind of help. I will post the pics from all angles to give a better idea of the setting.

The builder has a budget set aside and a local nursery for this project. I have not seen any specifics, I will look into their work some as you suggested.

Please don't take picture from all angles. Just go to be in line with the center of the house and stay in that spot for all pictures. Show the curb & back in the camera viewfinder. Aim left to get that side of the yard and pan rightward capturing the yard in slightly overlapping photos, until you have snapped the right side of the yard. Don't assemble the pictures into a computer generated panorama, but post them here individually. Since the landscape allotment is coming from the builder, it will be basic and the design will likely be typical and mediocre. If I'm right, it's much better for you to get outside help and massage the builder's people into doing the planting as much your way as they will.

Yardvaark, Looks great.. we will mull over it some . Like the C area connecting the front door to driveway/garage, royal access to the front door. :-). Although I think there is a designated walkway that is mandatory requirement that will cut the grass area short. Overall the details captured look amazing to me. Thanks!
