Landscape Design -- Modern Home
Comments (12)If someone is doing landscape design for you, you should be familiar enough with their work to know that you like and respect it. That will give you confidence that they can do something similar for you. If you are unfamiliar with their work, then it's a crap shoot. There are plenty of pros delivering mediocre work. If you're not sure if they're a landscape designer, you had best do some research. Someone who is primarily an installer may do a so-so design. Landscape is about setting, which is what's missing from your pictures. We can only see what's in front of the house. If you returned to the place where the above picture was taken and aimed the camera left, then right, showing the homes at each side, you could capture the rest of the view. Your large entrance area and the roof over the porch has architectural integrity and looks complete. I don't think any columns are necessary or desirable as they will tighten the opening. I like the idea of large, full porch and steps. I would do a derivation of an "S" curve and keep the walk away from the house so as to have proper room for plantings. The way to cheapen look of plantings is to have tightly pinched beds that are unrealistic for plant size....See MoreHelp me landscape my weird shaped mid century modern house!
Comments (10)If you look up photos of midcentury modern gardens, you'll see their lines mimic the themes of the architecture: spare, clean lines, often angular, emphasis on the horizontal, not a lot of ornamentation. This is great because it also tends to be lower maintenance than more exuberantly planted gardens. You can get away with a lot of lawn and a few evergreens. You have nice trees in place. If you intend to replace shrubs, look for plants with definite structure or shape; almost sculptural in form. In the southwest, cacti and agaves provide this beautifully, but in your climate, think of suitable plants that have similar strong shape characteristics. Color should come from foliage if possible. Nice house! Enjoy!...See MoreColonial Modern Makeover - Feedback Please
Comments (37)I like your house the way it is. I especially like the brick, the black door, the garage door style, and the placement of the house numbers. If it were my house, I would fix the siding next to the window, clean the siding and brick, and turn my attention to the yard. I might also remove the shutters because I dislike shutters that are so obviously inoperable; the black color is nice though. Also, perhaps a color other than white, like cream or a shade of green, would look better with the brick....See MoreStay traditional colonial or modern farmhouse?
Comments (9)You're desperately trying to turn your house into a "modern farmhouse", hence the other post about the black windows. Do you live in a rural area on a farm, like Joanna Gaines? Too much HGTV - you have a lovely colonial - keep it that way. You'll thank me in 5 years when MF is done and HGTV has moved on to something else they created to keep their revenue stream from drying up....See Moremisslucinda
