Comments (3)First, don't panic yet. Sometimes first fruit ripens because of some defection and it did not actually properly ripen. Come back when half the fruit has ripened and let us know what it tastes like. I don't think sour would be the result of anything you are doing, you can be responsible for bland fruit with a variety of mistakes but sour is different. I think you will find subsequent fruit to be fine. I don't think Lowe's would be selling anything other than mainstream varieties, all of which are selected partially on the ability to produce sweet peaches....See MorePeaches fall off tree before ripe or go from not ripe to rotting
Comments (3)It can be brown rot, but I'm not sure. The way you can be sure you have brown rot is some of the peaches in an advanced stage will have the brown dull powdery stuff on the outside. If that is what you have you need to spray, primarily in the early phases of fruit formation, to prevent the disease, and also perhaps a spray in July just before fruits start ripening. I use Serenade, an organic product, and it seems to work OK. You can also use propiconazole (Monterey Garden Fungi-Fighter). The peaches rotting in the bag are probably rotting due to brown rot, so it does sound like the fungus is present. The only thing about your description that doesn't quite add up is the way the fruits are falling off before they ripen. When you have brown rot they usually don't drop early, and in fact they can "mummify" on the tree, turning all shriveled and gross. Also it sounds like the fruits falling off look fine, just hard and unripe. It makes me wonder a bit if a storm or hail or something didn't come through and blow them off. One last thing it could be is some varieties of peach can drop fruits when they are young trees. It is common for them to drop in June but is not common to drop so late. Overall, I would spray for brown rot next year and hope for better luck.. Scott...See MoreAlmost ripe peaches
Comments (10)Lilacs: I'm with Ace and the Fruitnut. Don't just do something, stand there! Your peaches will be much better if you can leave them a lot longer on the tree. Peaches picked prematurely never achieve the sweetness and flavor of homegrown peaches, not to mention the texture. Get out ASAP and try to find some plaster of paris at a craft store. You don't need much. Carefully blend 1/2 cup PoP with 1/2 cup tasty peanut butter with a fork in a cereal bowl. If too dry, add a tiny bit of cooking oil. You will be able to form about 2 dozen bonbons with this mixture. Set them out in the evening in a convenient spot near your peach tree. By the following morning, most of them will be gone and so will the squirrels. A few will eventually trickle in from neighboring properties over the next few weeks, but in vastly reduced numbers.
