Whoa, my cayenne pepper plant

I cannot seem to find any information about this. I'm a newbie here so please bear with me. My healthiest looking cayenne pepper plant had two white flowers that had blossomed. Yesterday I noticed these flowers had turned yellow and shriveled up a bit and two other flowers had blossomed. The yellow flowers haven't dropped off or anything so I'm not sure what is going on. Are the peppers about to start growing or did the flowers just get incredibly burnt somehow?! Thanks.

After a few days, the open flowers shrivel and should drop off. Sometimes, the peppers grow through the dried flowers and leave like a "skirt" around the pepper. If it concerns you, carefully remove the dead flower, but make sure you hold the stem when you pull the dead flower off or you could pull off the whole thing. I say instead, just wait and it probally will fall off by itsself.

Yes, dried flowers or dropped off means the pepper is on the way. Now if the pepper stem drops off with the flower, well, thats a different issue.

Woohoo, thank you! I had a feeling the peppers would be popping up soon but there was a nagging voice in the back of my head telling me "shriveled and yellow... usually not a good sign when it comes to plants."

That looks like an awfully big pepper for a pretty small pepper plant. Sounds and looks like the plant has been rootbound for some time? That will prevent it from growing bigger, and eventually start fruiting. I would consider taking off the pepper, allowing the plant to focus on growing, now that it has all the space it needs for roots.

Yep, the Cayennes seem to get to full size quick and then just sit there. It takes a while to start seeing the red. The general consensus is that letting pods develop on immature plants will hinder its growth somewhat as the plant has to put a lot of energy into growing the pods. I am not sure where you live and how long your growing season is, but you can pick them now if you like. They do not have to be ripe before picking them. They likely won't have as much heat however. I think once you do pick them, you will see a lul for a day or two and then they will kick back into gear and you will start to see some new growth. Bruce

I have3 grown a chile for 9 yrs. I have seen tepins in Mexico that were at least 20 years old. All chiles are perennial.

If the stem drops off with the closed flower do not worry about it. It happens quite often when the plant first starts to send out blooms. There is noting wrong if it does this. It just means that the flower did not pollenate.

If the stem stays on, and the petals of the flower close up, or fall off then chances are it will develop a pod there. Do not go off of the look of the blooms. Go off of the look of the plant as a whole. If it is green, and buds are blooming then things are just fine.
