Farmhouse whole house paint and trim color ?

Hello! We are in the "so many decisions my head is spinning" phase of the building process. Today I'm trying to pin down the paint colors. We can have one color for the walls, one for the trim. I love the sorta colonial, sorta Swedish style of darker trim and paler walls. Not super dark trim... still light and airy, but a shade or two darker than the walls. Has anyone done this for their entire new build? I'd love to see pictures!

Also, if anyone can take a guess at the colors in this photo... I'd love to figure that one out. Our trim will be down right severe compared to all that lovely detailing, but our baseboards will be 10" and our trim hefty. Right now I have Farrow's James White as a guess for the white walls... I have no clue about the trim. Ideas?

Love the idea. Very clean and a great way to maximize your two colors.

You should cross post this over in home decorating. Those folks have a real eye for paint color matches, and white is always a hot topic.

I know this is a good 5 years later, but I was wondering if you still live in this house because it sounds like the exact description of the house I live in. We bought it in 2009. The rooms in the house and the layout is my exact house except the larger room upstairs is a parlor connecting to a smaller bedroom, and the living room is actually a dining room and the downstairs bedroom was never a bedroom but a parlor. They used it as a bedroom after they turned the downstairs bedroom into a bathroom and large gentlemen's closet. Anyways, I hope you get this because even if it is a different house, I would like to know what you decided! We are trying to figure out exterior colors at the moment. As far as I know the house has always been white, but it has such beautiful molding and gingerbread trim that I need ideas on accent colors for a white house.

What an adorable house! I grew up with those white frame houses with black trim, & to me, they always looked stark & maybe institutional. & this is what I thought when I was too young to know those words! I think with a pure white background, you can use pure clear colors like red, which is a great "country" color for houses, or deep cool pastels, like the gray you have now or maybe a deeper gray. Hunter green is also a traditional color for farmhouse trim, & it would play off the white white beautifully. I'm a fan of Behr paints from Home Depot, but a lot depends on your climate; we have lots of summer & you may have lots of winter or lots of salt spray. This forum's participants have a vast pool of experience a great willingness to share, so I'm sure somebody will give you expert advice on brand & type.

That is one cute house! Reminds me of something out of Little House on the Prairie. Any color trim would be nice. You can do it around the windows and along the roof line and along the edge of the portico. If you do a google search for Victorian Farmhouse and then click images, you'll see a lot of nice examples in all sorts of colors.

And other than a classic red or classic blue, I'd go with a classic yellow with white trim, or yellow with a mix white and sage green trim. :)

Don't worry about trying to match the paint to a photo. It truly isn't relevant to your house, which will have different lighting conditions, etc. Add to that monitor differences plus this photo looks totally overexposed and somewhat pinkish to me. Whites are the toughest! I ended up with a "leftover 150.00 worth of paint because I changed my mind to something imperceptibly different to most people, so I know how hard it is.

Get samples or the giant paint chips and hold them up to the walls after the primer is on if you can. They may look totally different on different walls. I have one wall where the color looks incredibly different from top to bottom, even. Good luck! (And take your time if you can. I must have had paint chips of 100 off-whites that looked good in the store. Some were immediately too pink or too yellow when I took them to the house.)
