Roses for front landscaping

Interested in your opinions on which varieties of roses you would suggest for use on each side of my front porch. We have a pair of potted boxwoods but would like something colorful on each side of the step. It is a south facing wall with full sun in zone 6a. My partner nor I have much experience with roses so any suggestions would be appreciated.

My experiences growing roses close to a well traveled sidewalk in New Orleans was NEVER grow red roses where the public can harvest them. I had Don Juans there and I had to beg people not to take them off of the two story porch...some even brought their scissors.

I ended up planting singles (Betty Priors) and Polyanthas (The Fairy) and they were stolen less often although some low life took a three foot long cane of one Betty Prior that was about to have twenty five blooms on it.

Ugh that's awful!! We live on a relatively quiet street and our porch is set back about 30 feet from the road.

I like the contrast between Limelight Hydrangea (which gets tall) and the Knockouts. I have several Knockouts and they are great plants requiring no care plus they bloom their heads off. I'd just suggest being careful of the Limelight in front of that window. How far out from the foundation will you plant it? Judging by the color of your car in front, your house is more grey than tan, right? So, in my opinion, you need more color contrast in the overall design. You might want to look at shrubs with different stem color or leaf color to stand out against the house. I wouldn't suggest specific plants unless I knew what kind of sun your front yard gets. Did I read your plan correctly --- there are lilacs on each side of the front entrance? Do you know what kind they are and how tall they grow? Lilacs are wonderful but can become huge. I know there are smaller, longer blooming varieties and wonder if these are what you have. I agree with the poster who said the beds need to be more substantial --- deeper.The peak on the left is quite tall and would be 'balanced' with larger planting bed in front of it. FInally, please don't plant a tree where it will block the view of the front door or the windows on the left. I think the inviting front entrance and porch are two of the nicest features of your lovely home! Molie

We have Peach Drift & I love it. The colors are amazing, always changing & it is has very good disease resistance. Happy Chappy is another really good ground cover rose.

Thanks - to answer a couple of questions, I am in Z 7 - I think I said that in my original post. DC Metro area. The infected roses have not yet been dug up - that will be done by the same company that will be replacing them, and I'm not sure what the little round evergreen bushes are. Also to clarify - my house is on the tour primarily for the "home" part of "home and garden" - my yard is nice but definitely not the feature, as is the case with most of the other houses as well. I don't know much about gardening, other than raised bed veggie gardening (what I know about rose rosette disease came from googling "what's killing my knockout roses") and have a service come to mow/weed/prune/etc., so I'm not sure I'm the best person to be educating people about anything...I just wanted the house to look as nice as possible curb appeal-wise before hundreds of people come tromping through. That's very helpful about Miss Kim. Maybe given the time crunch I will just have this landscaping co. replace the roses in the back yard which are completely dead and crispy as I think I can find some plants and shrubs I'll be happy with back there, and hold off on making decisions on the front...the roses in the front are not in quite as bad shape as the ones in the back. (this landscaping co. is well regarded locally and offering a 20% discount to houses on the tour, which is why I wanted to use them and do this now if possible).

It would help a lot if you could provide photos of the area in question. And zone 7 doesn't tell us anything except how cold it might get in winter....name of nearby large city is more helpful. Roses do best in full sun (8 hours plus), which is unlikely to be the case for a north facing aspect but they could be a possibility. And there is no issue with roses and a house foundation :-)

Geez, how nice of people. Actually that was one of the advice someone gave for growing Don Juan in helpmefind. The person said don't grow this rose near sidewalks as people pick them. I had people trying to take my L.D. Braithwaite last year. Someone was trying to rip the flower off but couldn't. First we blamed the rabbits but then realized the shrub is too high. Some people just don't have integrity and a sense to respect other people's property.

Wow the Betty Prior and polyanthas are beautiful! What is their growth habit? Are they more of a bush?

I also have a row of coral sunset peonies as a mock fence between mine and the neighbors lot, trying to decide if I should choose a rose in the same color family or something totally different.

Ballerina might appeal - it makes a pretty container plant, sprays of apple-blossom flowers and the added bonus of cute little hips later in the season. You'd need to check with others re disease-resistance in your area. You can look these or any other roses up by name on a website called HelpMeFind/Roses (sorry I don't know how to post a link); read the description, then click on Photos and Members Comments in the row of tabs at the top of the page for lots of....photos and members' comments (amazingly). :¬D

Oh, sorry, I just reread your comment above - this fenceline is nearby, is it, so the porch roses will need to co-ordinate? I'll have to look up those peonies - Ballerina might not be so great with coral...
