Wall color suggestions for kitchen / fam. room? Or keep?

Else

As you can see in the pictures, I have a white kitchen. My wall
color in the family room is currently a taupe that I'm hoping to keep because of the work involved in repainting.

My kitchen originally had light blue
counters and blue in the back splash. Then I got a couch years
ago and kitchen wall colors to match that made me so limited in how I
could decorate, because new cute things simply would not match. Maybe
couch more so than the walls (?) So now I feel like things that cannot
be switched out easily must be neutral so I can feel more free when I
decorate. The couch will hopefully go soon, and the kitchen valances can go once the couch goes. Or sooner. Once that happens, how do I paint the kitchen?

I
don't want my white kitchen completely washed out, I'd like something
pretty that won't tie me down so much. Any suggestions? Here's what I
struggle with: Should I keep the yellow or does it need an update?
Should I go with a nice, more fashionable color and just repaint it more
often? Does everything neutral have to be taupe or gray?
