I'd rent a Rug Doctor, make sure it has upholstery attachments on board. Don't rent just the plain carpet scrubber. The attachment I used was a hose with a piece on top about 4 inches wide for doing upholstery. I used it on a nylon sofa that was pretty grubby. It got it looking brand-new. Good luck!

I THINK ws means water based cleaners are ok. Once you get it clean though, spray it with a good fabric guard.

Very tough to clean some upholstery fabrics so proceed carefully. Cold water mixed with white vinegar might be the safest as the vinegar will keep the color fast if it wouldn't otherwise be but it really depends on the fabric. Might need steam cleaning. Might not be able to clean effectively. I happen to be taking a textile class and the instructor is super expert on all this and a nationally known designer. If you find out the composition of the fabric is I can email and ask him. He's seen everything and cleaning stuff is part of the class. The red dye issue just came up in class tonight.

So far, I was able to remove the second stain (with the power bar); but am having difficultly with the first one (old brown bag lunch). So far, no water marks, but second stain area is still drying after I blotted as much as I could. The second stain seems to be more of a dryish stain, whereas there was something in the lunch (fruit I think) that had spoilt and leaked through the fabric. Looks like chocolate milk was spilt there, but there was no container in the snack when I found it. The location is not ideal either since it's in the seams, welting and zipper area. I hate to have to bring in an upholstery cleaner as other than this stain the sofa is spotless as we rarely use it. I am just really upset at my DD (she claims she did not stuff her lunch back there, but bag had her name on it). I can't figure out why it was put there--perhaps younger DD trying ot get older one in trouble, who knows. I would be less upset if they had been sitting there and spilled some food because at least it was an accident, but this seems deliberate and now may have ruined an expensive sofa. It's in the corner and completely hidden by the cushion so could be worse. Sometimes I get so upset with her disregard for our possessions--there are pen marks on the family room sofa which I have to get out from time to time because she sits there, does her homework, leaves cap off pens. Still she is a straigh-A student taking all honors classes, really good in many ways, no trouble with drugs, etc. so in large scheme of things, I suppose I should not complain.... Oh well, I've not given up I can get it out and may end up taking just the cushion to the dry cleaner or perhaps I should get the Folex and try it. I've used that before for carpets (when we used to have carpets). It always worked well.
