Oxyclean may remove the stain, but if it is a dry clean only fabric, you could be left with a water spot.

I would probably try something like Spot Shot carpet stain cleaner in the aerosol can.

Good point, graywings, about the dry clean only fabric. I decided to call up Calico Corners where I had purchased the sofa 3-years-ago. They said the fabric is polyester and is dry clean only. They recommended a spot fabric cleaner, called ForceField, which they sell so I will go and purchase that. If that doesn't work, then they suggested I take it to a dry cleaner. I'll let you know how it turned out.

Test your cleaner on the back side of the cushion to see if it's going to leave a spot. My breakfast chair cushions are cotton and I couldn't spot clean them since it always left a water ring. I ended up taking the covers off and threw them in the washer on gentle cycle, then air dried. They came out clean and no shrinkage.

I'm afraid you may be left with a spot of some kind since there were probably oils in the protein bar. Check all over the sofa for any labels that show the fabric blend and see if it lists how to clean it. If it's safe for steam cleaning, I'd try that first. You'll probably need to clean the whole cushion, not just the spot.

My dry cleaner recommends that if 1 cushion is stained and needs cleaning, to have ALL the covers cleaned at the same so that the 1 cushion doesn't look "clean" and the rest have the normal wear/tear dirt.

You might try Folex. I've used this on upholstery stains like this before with great results. It's a spot cleaner that I found at Food Lion, but they sell it at other places, too. Took the stains out of our upholstered chair, (dried chocolate ice cream), in just minutes!

PS - I mentioned this product to the thrift store owner where I frequently hang out, and she now keeps it in stock to use on stained furniture items they get donated. She told me it's saved the sale on many of their upholstered items. She told me she'd give me a discount on any "big" item they now have in their store, because of my advice, but I haven't found anything there I needed....yet!

So far, I was able to remove the second stain (with the power bar); but am having difficultly with the first one (old brown bag lunch). So far, no water marks, but second stain area is still drying after I blotted as much as I could. The second stain seems to be more of a dryish stain, whereas there was something in the lunch (fruit I think) that had spoilt and leaked through the fabric. Looks like chocolate milk was spilt there, but there was no container in the snack when I found it.

The location is not ideal either since it's in the seams, welting and zipper area. I hate to have to bring in an upholstery cleaner as other than this stain the sofa is spotless as we rarely use it. I am just really upset at my DD (she claims she did not stuff her lunch back there, but bag had her name on it). I can't figure out why it was put there--perhaps younger DD trying ot get older one in trouble, who knows. I would be less upset if they had been sitting there and spilled some food because at least it was an accident, but this seems deliberate and now may have ruined an expensive sofa. It's in the corner and completely hidden by the cushion so could be worse. Sometimes I get so upset with her disregard for our possessions--there are pen marks on the family room sofa which I have to get out from time to time because she sits there, does her homework, leaves cap off pens. Still she is a straigh-A student taking all honors classes, really good in many ways, no trouble with drugs, etc. so in large scheme of things, I suppose I should not complain.... Oh well, I've not given up I can get it out and may end up taking just the cushion to the dry cleaner or perhaps I should get the Folex and try it. I've used that before for carpets (when we used to have carpets). It always worked well.

When I saw your stain on your beautiful sofa, I got a knot in my stomach. But, you're lucky it's in the corner and could be switched with the other side's cushion, and then a throw pillow? Anyway, another huge Folex fan here. I was going to suggest it when I first read this thread, and even looked on my bottle to see if it said upholstery, but it didn't, so I didn't suggest it. Maybe if you could just soak the corner of the cover in oxyclean, that might also work. I've removed many hard-to-remove stains that way. Good luck, and it sounds as if you have a wonderful daughter. That tendency toward distraction will work its way out in time.

Thanks Dee--for the suggestions and the support. Tomorrow I will try the Folex. I may try some oxyclean on the back section that the cushions rests on. We recently bought a used car for my DS to drive and the oxyclean worked great on getting out all the car upholstery stains--better than the spot cleaner I had bought. I'm a bit more nervous about the sofa cushion due to shrinkage, etc. At least there are no water stains, though.

I used Woolite pet oxygen cleaner to get rid of a dog throw up stain on a window seat cushion (also dry clean only). It worked remarkably well. It comes in a silver spray bottle.
