What happened to my apple tree?

No idea of apple tree species or age. It's approximately 20 (or more) foot tall.

I moved into my home in 2011 and it came with a small older orchard of apples, pears, peaches, cherries, and grapes. The tree in question
bore tasty, fist sized red apples up until recently.

The winter of 2013/2014 was absolutely horrible for my
orchard. It killed 3.5 peach trees, 1 apple, and most of my grapes. Almost
everything else didn't in the spring. Only the west side of the tree in
question leafed out last summer, but it dropped them early. They looked sickly
with yellow spots, though nothing else in the orchard appeared sickly. I
figured it was "winter injury".

Now it looks like this. Only a few branches on the west side
are budding out now. Everywhere else on the tree seems dead. The branches snap
right off and there's no green to them at all. What's going on?
