Can you help me (and perhaps others) add some steps to the 'hood size guidelines' to think through hood size for the Capital Culinarian 36" rangetop, or one of the other 'monster' home rangetops (e.g., Bluestar, Viking, Wolf,...) The usual rule of thumb I've seen is: 100 CFM / 1,000 BTU rangetop Width same as rangetop, preferably 6" wider (e.g., (36", 42" better) Depth same as rangetop, preferably 3" deeper (e.g., 24", 27" better) The problem is that it is extremely unlikely we'll run the Capital at its full 138K BTU (or any of its monster brethren). Does the following make sense, or can those knowledgeable improve on it? At top actual use, we'll be using: 1 Burner wok = 23K BTU 1 Burner soup/ water boil = 23K BTU, but limited need for venting, call it 10K 4 Burners Realistic Max Average = 10K BTU (e.g., 1* 15K averages w/ 1 simmer) Total Effective = 73K BTU, and thus need 730 CFM Hood Suppose we do the 'best practice' of turning the hood on a couple minutes prior to any 'high-vent need cooking' such as wok cooking. If the range top is against a back wall, would we then be comfortable with the 730 CFM fan in a 36x24" hood? If the range top is in an island, would we then be comfortable with the 730 CFM fan in a 42x 27" hood, as long as we limit any activities that would cause strong drafts in the kitchen during wok cooking (e.g., opening the door from kitchen to patio.) In our case, we're looking at 6 burners, no grill or other top. We look forward to your help.

Update on my Capital range cooling fan issue. With the assistance of another member here on Houzz I contacted the focal point for Capital customer service. I engaged with the customer service represenative and sent a video of the cooling fan making a loud noise. It was agreed the fan was defective and needed service and Capital would contact a service repair shop to schedule a time to make the repair. The Capital service representative was friendly; however, here we are weeks later and no service appointment has been scheduled. My intial contact with Capital customer service was before Thanksgiving and as of this date I have not been contacted by a repair company or anyone else to schedule service. I am told today when I called Capital they had left a message with a repair shop which was never returned. No additional follow up was ever made by Capital until I inquired. I didn't find this unusual since my initial contact via email to Capital customer service went unread until I called them two weeks after I sent it at which time they opened the message. Some 11 plus weeks have gone by. Two weeks of this elapsed time was on me due to not having access to the range at a second home to attain the serial number. Aside from those two weeks, Capital has been pleasant but ineffectual in getting anything done. I've not used the range other than test it. Perhaps, I'll love it when I use it. Frankly I'm not looking forward to installing the Capital range hood as I dread the idea of finding it too to have a problem. I would like to be able to cross "get new range fixed" off my to do list. One bit of advice to those seeking to purchase a professional range. Call and/or email customer service for the ranges on your short list to see how responsive the service department seems to be.

Thank you, thank you for all the wonderful feedback. I do want to stick with getting the grill and am going to do so. We probably will be cooking steaks outside most of the year (Jersey Shore), but in the dead of winter (especially like the last one) we would be cooking inside for 3 months or so. I want to grill vegetables, romaine, etc. inside. Two of you mention that you have the Wolf hood. Did you entertain the Best one? I have not priced the Wolf, but based on your comments will look into it. I had thought of Modernaire, Best and now Wolf. I do think I want to go a bit higher than the 1200cfm just because we have had such problems with setting off alarms. I will definitely try seeing how a 27" looks/feels - my hubby is 6'1" and because of his height we have had to scrap buying cute little converible :( so want to make sure he is okay with the height of the hoodt - he is the steak pro at our house! JScout - where do I look up more info regarding make up air. Would it only go on when the fan was on? Where should it be installed, how much, etc.... We keep finding and adding things in $$$$$! But, this is our dream house and we are so looking to doing it the way we want. Again, to all of you who took the time to write in - THANK YOU! Hi Bee, I'll toss my hat in, even though I have a 48 inch CC rangetop. The rangetop has 6 burners and a grill. See the photo below - click on it for a larger photo. Please tell me what brand you have. -- I had a custom Modernaire hood insert made for a wood hood. I went custom because I wanted a flat (and not tall) front edge of the hood to reduce the apparent mass of a big hood. (Also it is a landing perch for Alfred E Neuman until everything is completed.) The cfm's? -- I have a 1400 CFM Abbaka blower mounted on the roof. It is beautifully made, powerful, and quiet. I'm using a 10 inch round duct with 3 elbows, which is pushing it. -- The best price I found on the Abbaka fan was at www.dvorsons.com Is it oversized? If not, do you wish it were? -- The hood is oversized at 54 inches wide and 27 inches deep. Frankly I wish the hood were deeper, and here's why. Because of the shallow capture area under the hood, smoke plumes reach the front edge of the hood. Also, the front edge of the hood is occupied by halogen lights and controls, so the real suction area extends 21 1/2 inches from the tiled back wall. But, we've never noticed any spillover of the smoke out of the hood. -- See more comments below about dimensions. Do you wish it was quieter? -- Yes, but it is pretty quiet. The noise is from the air flow through the baffles and there's not much to do about that. Actually, a lower hood will sound quieter than a higher hood, if there is a direct line between your ears and the baffles with a high hood, and a indirect line between your ears and the baffles in a low hood. -- No one has ever commented that it sounds loud. The Abbaka fan is the quietest I could find. Abbaka publishes its sound level and Broan refuses to do so. I even called Broan's technical support people and they refused to give me a noise level for their fans. Do you wish it was more powerful? -- No. I wish the hood extended deeper than 27 inches. Maybe I wish I had more capture area (height of open space under hood) but it would mean losing the low profile of the front edge of the hood. Other comments about dimensions: -- After tiling the backsplash the 27 inch deep hood became a 26-1/2 inch deep hood. -- The rangetop cabinet is deeper than the adjacent cabinet, and we pulled the rangetop out slightly from the back wall so the back of the stainless back ledge is 3/4 inch out from the finished backsplash. We like having the extra space behind big pots and big flames on the back burners. We should have made the hood deeper to the extent we pulled the rangetop forward. -- The CC installation drawings are terrible. You should call them to clear up some of the ambiguities in their dimensional installation drawing. -- The front lip of the wood hood is 7 inches high. The bottom of the hood is 70 inches from the floor. My wife and I are both 5-11 and we don't come close to hitting our heads. Remember, the front knobs stick way out so they keep you from rubbing your body against the front of the beautiful and curvaceous rangetop. -- Our countertop is 37-1/2 inches from the floor and the bottom of the hood is 32-1/2 inches above the counter. -- The hood is 31-3/4 inches above the rangetop stainless and 31 inches above the cast iron grates.
