Need advice for ornamental trees/bushes near outdoor fireplace

All,

First time poster who is hoping for some help/advice.

Just finished putting in a new outdoor fireplace (photo below although the wood is not in the wood boxes on the left and right). If you see to the right and left of the wood boxes, there is a small sitting wall (approximately 1.5 to 2' tall). On the other side of that, there is a nice little corner created by the wood box and this wall. Wood box is about 2' deep creating a nice space, albeit small not allowing a lot of spread.

What I am trying to find is just the perfect tree or scrub to go there. Wanted something that would rise higher than the wall, but not a lot higher than the wood box. Something that really creates a nice view and set this area in nicely. We have looked at a ton of different ornamental trees (Crimson Queen Japanese Maple, etc), quasi tree/plants like Hibiscus, citrus trees like Myer Lemon, etc, and then some bushes/scrubs. The issue is they either become too tall or too fat. I was envisioning one taller tree/plant with possible underplantings, but could also look at something running the length of the wall (4' each side)

We live in Zone 7b in NC. To give you a sense, the rest of the landscaping is mainly tropical with banana trees, hydrogeneas, azileas, and some other more tropical type plants nearby.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Tom
