How do people get their seeds so clean?

I figured I'd ask this one well in advance of seed saving season.. for me anyway it's the start of growing season and no where near seed collection time..

I get in trade seeds, and often I'm seriously amazed at how clean the seeds are. Pepper and tomato seeds without a bit goo traces, or small flower and herb head seeds with almost zero or totally zero chaff.

About the only seeds I get totally clean is bean and pea seeds, and even at that I often have a little bit of flakes from the pods in the packets.

I did have some great luck with my toothache plant, dill, and parsley seed last season with a lot of winnowing.. but still had "home picked" debris in the packets.

So, how do folks clean their seeds? How to get them really clean?

A few sieves of different mesh sizes work great to remove most, if not all, of the chaff.

If it's a wet or fibrous seed (tomato, winter squash, cantaloupe, etc.), I remove as much gel, pulp, or fiber as I can, then put the seeds in a sieve. I hold the sieve under running water and rub the seeds against the mesh of the sieve. This removes a lot of the fibers and loosens most of the rest. Then I put the seeds in a bowl of water, where it's easy to pick off the floating or large remaining fibers. Put the seeds on a plate and once dry, it's easy to pick off any remaining fiber or pulp, if at all.

Some seeds (verbena bonariensis, ageratum, native aster, etc.) are so tiny, it's almost impossible (for me) to remove all the chaff. I put them in several sized sieves and shake, shake, shake over a plate. Take the plate outside and gently blow on the seeds a time or two. This removes some, but not all chaff. More than a time or two of gently blowing sends seeds away with the chaff, so I don't overdo it. On seeds like this, I write on the packet: :"Contains chaff. Sow with chaff."

Some seeds (columbine, poppy) simply need to have their "seed cups" turned upside down over a bowl and the seeds fall out, chaff free. Others (four o'clocks. sunflowers) just need to be picked off the plant.

Love all of these Bathroom photos! Thanks for posting! I'm in the middle of planning 4 bathrooms myself. I think Ann Kathryn is correct about why people don't post. After all of your planning and hard work, it's difficult when people are less enthusiastic about your project, even when you know every single flaw yourself! Posters need to be mindful of individual taste and geographical location. Certain remodels may not suit everyone's style, but that's why there's chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. My Mother used to say, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!"

Couple of strong guys and an appliance hand truck and you should be fine. Don't let the weight and difficulty of a one-time move put you off cast iron - it's worth the effort! A buddy and I wrestled a 320lb cast iron tub by hand up a "winder" staircase for my remodel project just last weekend. I wouldn't want to do it again but I'm glad we stayed with the cast iron. (My buddy wasn't too amused when I called him the next day and told him that we needed to return the tub because it was the wrong model - can't understand why he lost his sense of humor over a little ole bathtub.) Alisande, I never heard of the connection either. How it happened is for years I have had c-spine injury and was seeing multiple specialists trying to find one that would do the surgery on c2 and more. One surgeon wanted me to do the carpal tunnel surgery first to see if it would ease some of my numb arm problems, he also told me he thought it would help my pain by 80 percent and may even help my Raynauds by allowing proper circulation to flow...it sure did. I had it done on my left hand planning to do the right one day, but it helped so much I left it alone. 2years later I did find a surgeon to work on my spine...I feel wonderful now. I had my c-spine surgery almost a year ago.

Breezy, Thanks for the link. If it comes up so regularly, then it should probably added to the "sticky" or the other "FAQ" thread? The problem is that thread titles are not very descriptive or specific. I often cannot find my own threads if I don't bookmark them and forget the title. demolitionlab, If you don't mind, I'd like to know the size of yours. Fori, I don't have a hood. Also, the recommendation for 32"-36" height comes from the NKBA or some other "reputable source, not the TKO GW'ers, as far as I remember. LOL. I went to a showroom yesterday and they had one of those deep custom hoods. I am not 6' but it was quite uncomfortable. I had to watch out. I am sure I'll learn to compensate but I know DH would be very unhappy if he hits his head on that thing.

I watched this video on YT and it gave some good information about how to harvest and clean seeds. Of course it doesn't cover every plant or type of seed but it has some great ideas.

As for washing seeds, I do as plays_in_dirt does. However, washing them should come soon after harvesting, since I imagine that at some future time after you have left the seeds to dry, if there is still veggie or fruity goop on them that you meant to clean, and you wet it, that might trigger the seed to start some kind of germination. The other part of that is the goop might begin to have fungus, so again, you'd want to clean it soon after harvesting.
