Backyard help!! Need Ideas
Comments (8)stevega - the top of the hill is over 5ft from the flat area - I am 5 ft and it is taller than me when I stand on the flat areas. I guess the retaining wall would be more so if we decided to excavate the hill. Frankie - I will try an take that picture tomorrow - I do think that the railing is holding us in - but we don;t want to redo the deck until we have a better idea if we are clearning the hill or not. I want to be able to walk out the sliding glass door and right onto the deck and I was thinking more about something that was more of a platform with some wide step areas or steps spanning the entire platform. Maybe curving around when we first go out the door and opening more to grass and have the deck more to the left. (does that make sense?) I agree that I am not sure what will make it more open -but I just want to feel like I am utilizing more areas of the yard. My husband was thinking about one of the boulder walls - if we did something like that. I wonder if clearing the top area and taking out the stumps will lower it a lot and then we can have a slight grassy hill up to cleared area. Have it be much more slight. Thanks for all your ideas and comments. Ruth...See MoreIdeas for sloping backyard and retaining wall
Comments (4)The slope in the picture doesn't look that steep, but it still doesn't meet your needs. A cut and fill method would save some hauling. Cut into the top slope and use that to fill in the bottom slope to raise it. This may give you two more retaining walls depending on the degree of slope you leave behind. The far slope could be left as is and planting if not to steep or threating the integrity of others property. the cut and fill method may allow a lower height retaining wall that can by a DYI. This will leave one Retaing wall by the patio and then a second one bit up from there. It seems a little awkard?...See MoreTimber vs block for backyard retaining wall
Comments (2)Timber when done right can last, but there are also block walls that are only slightly more depending on the block and more reliable in the long run. Hope this helps!...See MoreSloped backyard: a job for the professionals or two amateurs?
Comments (23)@Christopher CNC Thanks for the response!! I actually grew up in the countryside and 100% agree that the things the city does is weeeeeird!!!! lol!!! We do plan on putting up a fence (there used to be a chain link fence yuck lol) but we wanted to wait in case we DO have to remove the tree (we're friends with the neighbor's thankfully) and if there is a fence that would make removal a lot harder. The new garage is NOT a footprint of the old one :S. It is twice the size honestly XD. It's a long story but we had a contractor we were working with for a looong time (2017, insurance thingy, etc) and when he put in part of a foundation he dug a 6-8ft trench and put in AWFUL wobbly looking concrete walls. We learned later that the way he was doing it was if we were going to attach the house to the garage (we live in michigan). Needless to say those ended up being removed. There is no pooling we have come across in the backyard itself so far! Everything seems to be following the path of the driveway. Thanks again for responding! :D...See MoreYardvaark
