For Skybird- Invasive tamarisk (or other weeds)

So, this isn't JUST for Skybird, but she brought up tamarisk in another topic which I had initially thrown way off course. Sorry again, Julia. So, in an effort to put the crazy train back on track, I'm going to start a whole new thread!

I don't have any handy information (I wish I had seen this this morning) the noxious weed book I keep at the house only has ID info, not control info! BUT! I am pretty sure I have a brochure at work on tamarisk control if you want I will grab one and bring it to the swap with me!

Also, I know Jefferson County has an online database on noxious and invasive weeds that list control measures as well, and here is the link for their page on tamarisk.

Oh! I just found my list of contacts. I have phone numbers and emails for the weed managers in each County and also for the State Weed Managers at the department of Ag and CDOT. Jitsmith, as pertains to the Oenothera, check out the thread linked below--and I don't think you'll have any trouble at all deciding what to do with the stuff! Oh, yeah, the flowers are pretty---but too much of a good thing isn't pretty at all! I wasn't familiar with that particular Anemone, so I checked it out. I think your plan to stick it in a pot is a really excellent idea! :-) Zach, I hadn't even thought about snow-on-the-mountain, but that stuff is nasty, nasty, nasty! It's been a while since it's come up, but we've had folks around here in the past who were desperately seeking ways to get rid of it. If you have it in the grass I recommend Weed-B-Gon to at least knock it down some. Would probably take a long time to get rid of it all the way, but mowing it, rather than weakening it, will have the opposite effect. Mowing it will just promote new--and more--growth and it'll come raging back bigger and better than ever. I don't understand--and didn't when I was selling them either!--why these kinds of things are sold commercially, or at least why they're sold without a SERIOUS warning about what's gonna happen when you plant them in the ground!!! I used to try my best to warn people when I saw them picking out things like these. Houttuynia, Chameleon Plant, is another one, but you don't hear about that one as often as snow-on-the-mountain or Mexican Evening Primrose. I used to actively try to discourage people from buying Houttuynia! Pretty green/red/yellow/cream AGGRESSIVE leaves! The partly saving grace out here is the dry soil which slows it down some, but with moist/wet soil it takes over the world! Think Kudzu! There should be a Federally mandated warning on the pots for things like these! WARNING! This plant can be dangerous to the health of your yard--and to your blood pressure and your mental state!!!!! All are good tips to deal with Field Bindweed (a.k.a. Morning Glory). Here's my 2cents worth: The most effective way to deal with any plant (either to make it grow or to kill it) is to understand how it propagates itself. One of the reasons that Bindweed is so invasive (and frustrating) is that it really badly wants to "go forth and multiply". Bindweed is very successful at all of the requirements for survival: 1)It's a long-lived perennial, 2) it propagates both by vegetation and by seed 3)the seeds are viable for a long time in the soil (I've heard 30 years) 4) I've seen a picture of the root system being over 20 feet deep 5) it will re-sprout a new plant at each "node" along the root and stem 6)it's quite drought tolerant 7) it is happy in ANY kind of soil (clay, sand, rocks, loam... But it likes disrupted soil the best. All this is very discouraging, but understanding Bindweed's method of reproduction helps control it. Here's what's been successful for me in "managing" Bindweed in my yard, and in the other yards that I've worked in. I've delt with many acres of Bindweed, and now only have to carry a small bottle of glyphosate in the spring and remind the Bindweed who's boss. ;) 1) First line of attack is to manage the existing plants, and their root systems that sprout from each node when you pull off the top. I've tried many ways to deal with the "parent" plant (pulling, smothering, tilling, burning, vinegar, salt, solarizing with plastic, etc.). But the most effective way that I've found is that it's important to use an herbicide that trans-locates the herbicide through the root system (therefore killing the roots along with the vegetative top growth; remember that Bindweed sprouts from each node including on the root system). Glyphosate (the effective ingredient in Roundup) is one of the more successful herbicides that trans-locates through the root system. There are a few "tricks" in using glyphosate. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and mix the glyphosate using the instructions for "shrubs/vines" (in other words, mix it as strong as possible). Glyphosate is easily neutralized by contaminates, so make sure you don't use dirty water (from a pond, etc.), don't add any other chemical unless it specifies that it's compatable, and make sure that you don't use a metal canister to mix/spray/store it in (I use plastic). Having said that, I add a few "secret ingredients". Glyphosate works best in slightly acid pH water. Most of our mountain states have alkaline soils, and therefore alkaline water. Therefore, I add a bit of vinegar (about a tablespoon/gal) to acidify the water. The next ingredient that I add is a surfactant (which some of the herbicides already have in them). A surfactant breaks down the surface tension on the leaf, and allows the herbicide to spread over the surface therefore being more available to be absorbed (also called a spreader/sticker). One of the easiest surfactants is liquid dish soap. A few drops is plenty. The final "secret" ingredient is a bit of water-soluble fertilizer such as Miracle Grow. It is extremely important for the plant that you want to kill is "actively green and growing". Fertilizer helps with this. Keep in mind that glyphosate is a NON SELECTIVE herbicide. It will kill any plant, but it has to touch the leaves (or other part of the plant that has chlorophyll in it (some plants have chlorophyll in their trunks/stems). Glyphosate is neutralized in the soil and therefore is NOT a soil contaminate/sterilizer. Be careful of chemical drift (the wind blowing the spray to other plants), tracking glyphosate on your shoes, tracking via pets, rain, etc. If the Bindweed is amoung other plants, I use a plastic drinking cup that has the bottom cut out. I pull the Bindweed through the bottom of the cup, and then spray into the cup therefore reducing the possibility of the herbicide drifting onto other plants. I let this dry, and then remove the cup. I also have heard of using a paint brush and painting the leaves, and also "foaming" the soap into bubbles (remember the soap?) and placing the glyphosate-infused bubbles on the plant. It's hard to be exact when you're spraying, so try these other options. It is most effective to use glyphosate in the fall when the plant is pulling nutrients into their roots getting ready for winter. But, Bindweed takes persistence, so use it whenever you can. Another tip: DON'T use any herbicide when the temps. will be over 80degrees!!! Most all chemical herbicides will volatilize above 80 degrees and turn into a gas and drift onto other plants. :( 2) Now we have to deal with the seeds! A pre-emergent herbicide (such as Preen) will help, but you're only putting off the germination of a 30 year viable seed. I've chosen to allow them to germinate and then continue to kill the "parent" plant. Do this by pulling new seedlings and continuing to use glyphosate to kill the more mature plants. Remember, each time you till or work the soil, you're bringing up seeds to the surface so that they will germinate. It will seem like a never-ending battle, but you can win! There's an old saying that it takes 7 years to manage one year's worth of laziness by allowing a plant to reseed. Don't give up! Sorry for the long reply. Hope this helps!

I missed that you had come back with a reply, Coach! It sounds like you have some species of Asclepias! One of the common names is butterfly weed, and people pay money for the stuff you're trying to get rid of! Like dandelions, the seeds "float" in the air, and my guess is that some neighbor pretty close has one/some they're cultivating to attract butterflies! The most common species is A. incarnata--but I really have no way to know if that's the species that's showing up in your yard or not. Some info at the link below if you're interested in more! In terms of getting rid of it, I recommend Weed-B-Gon. You can use that in the grass--it kills only broad leaf plants, and you can use it where there is no grass too. From my experience it works better than Roundup, and it's what I use anywhere I need an herbicide these days--works quite well at getting rid of cottonwood and aspen suckers in the grass! As far as I know all, or at least most, milkweeds have taproots, so the sooner you get rid of them the easier it will be. If you decide to try to pull them, you'll need to get all of the root out or they'll come back from anything you leave behind! If you have a place where you want to grow some to attract butterflies (it's also a host plant for the caterpillars), you can just deadhead the flowers before any seeds form to help keep them from "filling up your yard!" Can't help with "the neighbor" if I'm right that that's where the seeds are coming from! Skybird P.S. The "plant" you were getting into as a kid was most likely dandelions! PopMama, I got curious enough to check out the Colorado Noxious Weed list on this one—and it’s NOT on it! As of now, none of the Campanulas are on it! But here’s a good info page I ran into if you want to see more about it. Check out the tabs on top for pics and other info. On the “legal status” tab it tells if a plant is a Noxious Weed ANYWHERE in the country. If it’s not, there’s just no “noxious weed” info there! (This is the USDA site some of us have referred to recently, but it looks to me like they’re changing it—for the better! There's more useable info than I remember the site having!) Pics of it on the “images” tab, and I agree that’s what it is—I hadn’t been familiar with it before! http://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=CARA&photoID=cara_004_ahp.tif I way agree with OakIris that it’s a good idea to get rid of it NOW, while you still can. I made a mistake when I decided the Mexican Evening Primrose (Oenothera speciosa ‘Siskiyou’) that was here when I bought the house was SO Pretty that I didn’t want to get rid of it—even tho I KNEW it was invasive. A couple years later—after it had gone UNDER my 3’ wide sidewalk I decided maybe it wasn’t so pretty after all—and spent a few years fighting it to finally get rid of it all! I KNEW it was invasive! It was pretty dumb of me to decide to let it grow in the first place, pretty or not! OakIris, I definitely agree that if you use an herbicide, no matter which one you pick, they all have some sort of a problem or disadvantage. I, also, try not to use them whenever possible, but there are times when, for me, there’s no other option. Here are a few pics I took yesterday! My front yard is, literally, turning into the new Aspen Pando! I’ve been fighting my neighbor’s aspen trees ever since I moved in here, and, in this case, the only alternative to using an herbicide is to BOMB my neighbor’s aspens—which would inadvertently include his house! It’s not possible to pull them out—no matter how often you pulled them. The roots from his trees are still in MY yard, and the suckers will keep coming up into perpetuity! Here’s the situation! (Yeah, my grass looks awful! I didn’t want to mow until I got them sprayed so there’d be as much foliage as possible, and with the rain we had it wasn’t possible to spray them, and I finally just got it done yesterday! Right after I sprayed them—decided I wanted to Document them! Tonite I’m gonna water the heck out of them to get them sucking up as much of the WBG as possible.) From the neighbor’s side of my yard! The dandelions, other assorted milkweed, and other assorted WEEDS are from the Weed Lot Neighbors BEHIND me! Also, I have found a way to use WBG in my perennial beds—even when the weed is right in the middle of a good perennial plant. A few years ago I took these pics so I could show people how I do it if it ever came up around here. In this case, too, there was no other option. Or, I guess you could say there was an option, but that option would have been to dig the whole plant up in order to be able to get the whole root of the weed—which was a thistle—out of the ground, and then to replant the whole—big—plant! That wasn’t gonna happen! Here’s a pic of the thistle in the MIDDLE of my (good) plant. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Ilh2INAPjBhE1nsFp34gMsK0nZGRGfHLEy4-V3DuEj0?feat=directlink What I do is to cut a small hole (just big enough for what I need to do) in the corner of the bottom of a plastic bag (I use non-zipper ones—they’re cheaper and easier to handle), and then I pull the entire weed up into the bag, “secure” the bottom of the bag where the hole meets the ground—usually by pushing the plastic slightly into the soil, and then, after being sure ALL of the weed is inside the bag I spray enough to wet all the foliage with a pressure sprayer (I think it would be really hard to keep the spray in the baggie with a spray bottle). Then I leave the top of the bag open for a day or so, so the plant can keep “growing” and draw the herbicide down into the roots, and then I usually close the top of the baggie and let it Stew In Its Own Juices! Kind of like Zach’s solarization system! I leave the baggie in place till I’m sure the entire plant is dead—or until it starts to grow again, in which case I give it another spritz of WBG. With this particular “weed,” one application (of WBG, not RU) was enough to send it to that Great Weed Cemetery in the Sky—or wherever it is! With bindweed (I only have an occasional “individual” one at this point) I wrap the vine around my fingers into a little “role” and tuck it into the baggie. (One other thing! If you use an herbicide and accidentally get it on a “good” plant, if you rinse it off immediately it won’t do any harm. Just rinse it off BEFORE it dries!) A couple times I used a club cracker box—just folded the flaps on the bottom up into the box, put it over the weed, firmly into the soil, sprayed, waited a day or so, and then closed the flaps on the top of the box! (It kind of looked like I was trying to grow Club Crackers in my garden!!!) When I was desperately trying to get rid of the Mexican Evening Primrose, I took a large sheet of cardboard and held up against the (big) plants that were immediately next to the primrose—firmly on the ground, sprayed them, waited a couple minutes for them to dry, and pulled the cardboard out. So anything that will keep from getting the spray on the “good” plants works. I’ve heard stories where some people claim the herbicide can somehow transmigrate from the roots of the weeds you’re trying to kill into the roots of the good plants you want to save—but I’ve sure never had that happen, and as you can see, I’ve done it, literally, in the middle of a “good” plant! So it is possible, and I do it in cases where “pulling” just isn’t an option. Hope some of this helps if you ever get to the point where you feel you don’t have any other options. Skybird P.S. IN AN EFFORT TO GET THIS ALL MOVED TO THIS THREAD, HERE'S WHAT I JUST POSTED TO YOU ON THE "WRONG THREAD!"

Zach,

I'd love to have any info you may have access to! The stuff
has taken over the far southwestern corner of the state (and lots of other
places!) and is along every stream and gully, sucking up ALL the valuable
moisture that's needed for REAL plants! Last year I was researching
reforestation for the burn areas on the Ute Mountain Tribal Park, and since
finding out about the tamarisk problem, now I'm doing my best to find helpful
mitigation info about that. There are endless masses of the stuff along the
Mancos River, which used to flow year round, and doesn't even have a chance
anymore between the drought down there and the tamarisk! And, not to mention
that the tamarisk "squeeze out" all the natural things that used to
grow along the streams--like so many "introduced" species do! When
Humans try to FIX Nature, it usually doesn't work! Dumb Humans!

Last fall I spent some time researching the problem, and the
tamarisk beetles (I called them mites above!), from what I could find, aren't
doing much, so I keep thinking there MUST be a better way! Hope I'm not wrong
about that.

Don't know if you--or anybody you work with--have any use
for this, but here's a link to a site I found with LOTS of Tamarisk info! I've

Fortunately, tamarisk is not a major problem at where I work, from what I have seen . Course, most of the park is gambel oak chaparral and grassland, we don't have much in the way of riparian areas. (But see my lament about mullein in the other thread...and to think people grow that s**t on purpose!!!!!!!!!!)

Tamarisk is some nasty, nasty stuff (like I said, I don't have a lot of experience with it myself). Not only does it suck up water but also increases soil salinity, which, in an area as arid as the Four Corners region, is already going to be a problem! Of course, some genius also though kudzu was a great idea, too.

Well, they must have hired the kudzu wizard here in Colorado.Smooth brome isn't even listed as invasive, and still touted as a "fantastic range grass" while buffalo burr, a native plant, is on the noxious list! Really?

That's why I am EXTREMELY cautious when it comes to biological controls. I typically would rather dump round-up on an area (that's right I said it) than "introduce" another species to control the first. That's why Hawaii has lost so many native birds due to snakes, mongooses and cats. I call it the "old lady who swallowed a fly" syndrome.

Oh, sure, we do ALL KINDS of special research to find out if the BC meathod will become a problem. Well, anyone who has watched the 9 o'clock weather forecast in Denver should know how much we can trust computer models!

I will definitely look at work tomorrow, I think I have a few more books and I know I have box of invasive species pamphlets, and if I remember correctly, one of them is on tamarisk. I will also shoot you an email with those contacts this week sometime.

And hey! If you really want to get involved, CPW, and I'm sure almost every other agency in the state, uses (more like depends on for continued survival) volunteer groups (like VOC) to help out. I have a group coming out later this month to do some weed control with me in fact!

No problem. I hope I am able to help out in some way. At the risk of sounding like a hippy, I chose my career because I love the natural world around us, and I love Colorado. It really sucks to see it when it's full of garbage, and the very things that make it special getting destroyed by that garbage (and development, but, that's a story for another day).

Those tamarisk mites, or beetles, will do a number on them - you can really see the difference along the Colorado River around Moab

Ah, cross posted with Zach - I've got smooth brome grass. Boy, do I have smooth brome grass. Try to keep that out of your garden beds.

I just returned from a 9 day adventure to Moab. It was a great time. First few days we camped at Big Bend. The tamarisk is still pretty much dominating the river banks and side canyons. Though it did seem that in a few areas the tamarisk has been slowed down or reversed. The beetles have their work cut out for them.

Beautiful place to camp, Greg! Have you ever done the entire Rt 128 from
Cisco to Moab? Beautiful! Also, if you get back in the area, I highly
recommend a drive down Rt 279/Potash Road, just over the bridge on the north
end of Moab. It goes along the Colorado
River and past some of the most amazing sheer cliffs—RIGHT next to the
road. There are a couple places with
“Indian Writing” (petroglyphs!) on the bottom of the rock walls, again, right
next to the road, and then a little further down it goes right by Jug Handle
Arch, then past the potash mine, and a little ways past that you get to a boat
ramp (where rafting trips depart), and there are some spectacular views there
too. Past that it goes UP, somewhere
into Canyonlands, on dirt roads where you need 4WD, so I can’t go there, but
I’m sure it’s some more amazing stuff!

David, I’ve been looking at my pics from last fall, and I
can’t tell what’s tamarisk in the pics and what’s not! I wasn’t actually paying attention to “what”
was growing there when I was there, was just looking for “pretty” pictures, but
from what I remember, there were no “wide dead patches” as shown it the pic you
posted. Here are a couple of the pics
along the Colorado River just west of Rt 191 at Moab. Can you tell what’s what? There IS a row of something that looks like
it’s “in distress” just above the vegetation that’s closest to the river. [You can magnify by clicking on the magnifying glass, and then clicking the "+" in the top left of the picture]

Zach, I’m insanely busy trying to get ready for my “spring

“The Mancos” at Towaoc/Cortez is where I’m heading again
when I go, and I’ll be doing another tour on the Tribal Park—the road into the
Park runs right along the Mancos, and if we have time going in or out, I’ll ask
if we can stop and walk down to the “river,”—it might even actually have water
in it in spring!—and I’ll get some pics and try to check out the “state of the
tamarisk!” I know (from something I
found last fall when I started the research) that they have released beetles in that area, but from what I remember seeing
last fall, it sure didn’t look to me like they had done any damage. It’ll be interesting to see what I find when
I’m paying more attention! When I’m
doing the tours it’s not usually the tamarisk I’m thinking about!

So, unfortunately, I DO NOT in fact have tamarisk control brochures! I thought for sure I had seen them, but doggone it, I don't!! I guess since it's not prevalent where I am, it makes sense we don't a lot of info on it. I'm sorry about that!

What I did find (and I didn't look through the other shelf of books yet) was a publication from Larimer County that had some information on it.

It discussed tamarisk beetles (Diorhabda spp.) and said "...was released in Western Colorado in 2005 with promising results."

Other control measures include mechanical, such as cutting, bulldozing and fire are effective only if followed with chemical applications of herbicides.

The most common method of treatment is the "cut stump treatment" where the tree is cut near the base and then treated with an application of herbicide. The chemical must be applied immediately or the sap may dry and prevent intake by the stump. The most effective herbicides are Habitat and Garlon, which must be applied with a crop oil concentrate. Smaller trees may be controlled with a foliar application.

Herbicides: Imazapyr (brand names Arsenal, Ecomazapyr 2, Habitat, Powerline)
Tryclopyr (brand names Element 4, Element 3A, Garlon 4, Garlon 3A, Weed B Gone, Capstone)

I did find some interesting information on the beetles in Arizona. As it turns out, the loss of tamarisk along riparian corridors in that state may negatively impact endangered migratory birds that use them as nesting sites since human engineering (such as dams and channelization) made waterways uninhabitable to native plant species.

A New York Times article mildly touches on the question I had when you first brought up the beetles; what are they going to eat once they eradicate the tamarisk?

Skybird, I always take 128 into Moab from I70. Don't know much about Cisco.

We saw lots of petroglyphs. It's a shame that many are being defaced. Yes we went up Potash road. :-) The best ones in my opinion were down the road from Newspaper Rock.

Was just checking before signing off for the nite! Thank you, Zach! Just knowing you were willing to find what you could for me means a lot to me!

I think I found pretty much the same info you just posted--about the various herbicides and stuff. It's in a pdf I found, and it also says that it reproduces by seed ("small wind-borne seeds" that "can germinate in 24 hours"!!!), ROOT FRAGMENTS, and CUT STEMS! It says that "cut trees need to be CHIPPED!" Sounds AT LEAST as bad a kudzu!!! Another Plant from Hades--that somebody "thought was pretty!" From what I've found out so far, I think the Tribe is VERY "Earth Friendly," and probably not very inclined to use herbicides, but for now I'm gonna just keep on finding out as much as I can.

Cool pics! Is the bottom one Newspaper Rock? I drove all the way into Needles District a couple years ago, but ran out of time and went right past Newspaper Rock without stopping! Guess I'll need to put it back on the agenda for another time! This fall I'm skipping Moab and going out to Tropic to do a couple days hiking in Bryce. Where are your other petroglyph pics taken?

Isn't it absolutely amazing what "people" will do to things like the petroglyphs!?! A few years ago I was hiking a petroglyph trail near Calf Creek Falls and there was a place where somebody had taken some sort of a concrete saw and it looked like they had tried to cut a "whole panel" off of the side of the mountain! Wait! I just remembered I have a pic of it!

Who on earth would even THINK of defacing such ancient and historical--and for the Pueblo Peoples, sacred--anthropological material!

This is another panel on that trail with a whole bunch of modern graffiti "scratched out!" Makes you wonder about Human Beings!

Have you ever hiked the Granary Trail on top of Aztec Butte in Canyonlands/Island? Very cool, and AMAZING views!

P.S. Here's the "Creation Panel" at Kiva Point on the Ute Mountain Tribal Park. It's the "left half" and the "right half," and the "grove" cut in the rock face on the far right side of the second one is believed to represent a direct line into a sipapu and back down into the Earth.

Skybird, the other pictures were taken near newspaper rock. Quoting from wow guodes utah canyon country "just 1.9 miles farther is a pullout on the left (east). From there if you walk across Indian creek and continue 110 yards to the cliffs at the shay canyon confluence, you'll find two more venerable but overlooked art panels".

Thanks, Greg! I copied the info and have it in my Moab/Blanding folder for the next time I stay in that area. This year I found a cool old house to stay in at Tropic, so I'm gonna be spending some time this fall hiking at Bryce--which I've wanted to do for several years now. Any other recommendations for good Anasazi "stuff" in Four Corners or southern Utah are always appreciated!
