Variegated Jade ID & Help
Comments (13)Blutarski, are you growing both the green and the variegated form? Perhaps your soil-mix holds more moisture than mine? I grow these in bark, perlite, and small gravel, in plastic containers. The water flows right on through. I water my variegated Port. afras regularly - about as regularly as I water my Christmas Cactus. But I do wait to water my green Port. afra until I see wrinkled leaves. The reason being, if I water before I see wrinkled leaves....I end up with yellow leaves, which then fall from the plant. Thanks, Mary, I appreciate the vote of confidence! I still have much to learn, though. And, of course, all gardening is local....what works for me might require a small adjustment to work for others. Comments (47)Thanks for inquiring Marguerite! Well, it's been a struggle... The large piece finally seems to have rooted and drank some water, it hasn't gown at all and it lost a couple bottom leaves. I added the fine sand as there were roots poking out. There was a tiny little variegated piece, it shriveled and died. A couple months ago there was a tiny solid green jade cutting that needed a home, so I stuck it in. I just started to use weak dosage of Foliage Pro, so hopefully it will put out new growth soon. Nancy...See MoreNeed help with variegated jade plant
Comments (17)aaypua It looks to me to be a fungal disease - maybe powdery mildew or anthracnose. High humidity, poor drainage and overwatering are all 'helping' the fungus diseases. Poor drainage as in potting mix , and also a container without drainage hole, or a glazed container that takes longer to dry up. The little of the soil visible in your photos seems to be dark - maybe you keep it too wet? If my plant, I would discard all visibly diseased leaves and stems, repot into well draining mix into non-glazed container with drainage holes, use a fungicide and make sure potting mix almost dries up before watering again. I use top-dressing of gravel or pebbles on all my plants, but maybe you should keep it off (at least for a while) until you see improvement - some ppl suggest that it will keep in too much humidity. I do not have that experience, but perhaps in hotter, wetter or more humid climate it is a fact. I also use potting mix without any soil and that could (?) make a difference. Make sure there is good air circulation around the plant, if indoors - maybe set up a small fan....See MoreHelp: Gollum Jade in root pain!
Comments (12)I assume it isn’t limp...right? I don’t know how you repotted, but...Personally, I would repot in a clay pot, the azalea style which is about as wide as tall. This style pot is a very stable and has weight compared plastic. Not sure what you used of course. Use a fast draining mix of half commercial c/s mix and sifted perlite or pumice. You need a fast draining mix, avoiding leather. What mix are you using? Put outside as soon as warm enough so it gets lots of sun. It should be ok. I would not clip anything off. Your plant has a nice shape and needs those leaves to grow. I wonder if the plant was a cutting when you got it and it’s just starting to put out its roots. I think your plant will be fine. Buy kitty a new scratcher to distract. Although I don’t think she’s hurting the plant, you could put something to the side of it to keep her away. You don’t want her to knock it on the floor...See Morebernardyjh
