The answer to my second question is this... Earthlink has been trying to phase out a particular server for years now. You need to access your server settings via account settings and change the server and port assignments. Problem laid to rest... ver 2.0 installed

Thanks, Grandms. I couldn't reply right away because I had to go out for several hours. I go directly to the web mail via my browser, connecting to each type of e-mail separately by clicking on it in Bookmarks (=favorites). I never use Outlook E. and although I do use Hotmail, I decided not to have it gather all my e-mail in one place. I use one e-mail program for one sort of business, and other programs for friends, or i-Tunes receipts, and so on. It simplifies life somewhat. Hmm, although over the past three days or so, I had to give up on many of my attempts to bring up Lycos, this morning and again, just now, it came up with no problem. I can't help connecting the trouble with their switch to Zimbra, but on the Zimbra forum that I visited in hopes of a cure, Zimbra told someone else that it is entirely a Lycos problem and, in effect, washed their hands of it. When I was searching here for a solution, I came across a post I made in Dec. about something similar, but not as bad as it was this time. I guess if no one else is having this trouble and it doesn't start bothering me again, I might be smart to just let sleeping dogs lie!

Do I delete each account and then recreate it as IMAP? Will I lose the e-mails that have been saved under Local Folders? " One thing . . . my "Local folders" only contain Trash & Outbox. All my other Inboxes, etc. are within separate acct folders. I.E., each other acct. contains an Inbox, Drafts, Sent, etc. - outside of "Local Folders." Anyway, there's a good chance that after you create an IMAP acct., the email that you have already downloaded using POP mail, and deleted from the server - won't show up in the IMAP Inbox. You'd have to import them back in. Just to be safe, I would export all your email first so that you have it as backup. Then make new accts as IMAP. See if everything looks correct, or if you need to import anything from the backup you just made. Finally, delete the POP accts. There is a really handy addon tool for TB : ImportExportTools https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/?src=search (That page looks complicated, but the use of the tool is not) The two different ways to export using that tool are - (and you get to the choices by right clicking on "Inbox" or any other folder) : 1) "Export folder" (w/ or w/o structure) This makes an Mbox file of everything that you export. It makes for just a few simple files that aggregate everything within the respective folders. So you will end up w/ one Inbox file, one Drafts file, etc. "Structure" just means you will keep the nested structure of the folders. The disadvantage is that you can't read them later w/o importing them back first (using ImportExportTools). 2) "Export all Messages" (and choose "eml" format here) This exports each email as a .eml file - and you can identify and read each one separately later after exporting. So if you export 500 emails, you'll get 500 .eml files. You can batch import them though using ImportExportTools. And you can read them just by clicking on them individually. There's no harm in exporting both ways if you like. Just create separate folders so you can keep it all straight. Play around with it a bit until you get the hang of it. For all the people recommending this way to do email or that - this debate has been going on for years. There are advantages and disadvantages to each - it really depends on your needs. I wouldn't say that any one of them is "unusual" as someone commented - what's unusual to one is likely normal to someone else. Personally I use them all, and all for different purposes - no one method seems to work for every purpose. I do use web based email for the most part though. I started with a single Yahoo address, and now have several addresses on Yahoo. They restrict me to 200 file folders, and as far as I know, I can't sub-head files. Had one at AECCafe, an architectural and engineering site, back when they offered more storage than Yahoo. Son likes gmail, got me started on them, also. Friends like it, because I'm on dial-up, so they can't call when I'm online, and often I'm doing other things so don't see their email that arrives on Yahoo ... I think that it would notify me if I were to use Instant Messenger. Gmail has a little circle that sits down in the right corner of the screen, and when a new message arrives, a red "M" appears in it ... ... so my friends appreciate that if they want to get in touch quickly, they can do it. My ISP, Porchlight, an agency that serves about half a dozen medium-sized cities in this area, offers one (up to 3?, I think) , as well ... but I seldom use it. A news service sends a message at least once daily, but I'm not much interested in them. Yahoo separates the apparent spam, which they used to direct to a "Bulk" bin ... but they recently redesignated that area as "Spam". I don't feel that they're super good it blocking it. I have received hundreds of offers to aggrandize my penis, some offering to have it done right quickly ... but haven't taken them up on any of their offers, thus far - don't feel the need. I was a bit worried about one that claimed to be fast-acting ... figured that if I took their pill a bit too long (if you'll pardon the expression) ... I'd probably need a wheelbarrow to cart the organ around! Anybody interested to help some employee of a bank somewhere in Africa (or Hong Kong, Netherlands, U.K., etc.) that knows of an account of several million owned by someone who, along with his entire family, died in a plane crash, which this person would like to set you up as a long-lost relative, or business partner, to collect the money (before the bank transfers it into it's unclaimed account file) ... for your trouble, he's offering you 40% or so, usually, and he'd like you to help him come to your country, so that he can invest the rest. I've received over 150 or them at one address ... if I added up the total of my share, it'd surely come up to somewhere near half a billion. That'd be a big problem ... I wouldn't have any idea of what to do with that much money! I've used Outlook Express some in the past, but haven't been set up for it for a long time.
